Loran C Demise

Tug- That's a lot of electronics on that boat!

I don't see what would be the Si-Tex GPS / Loran C receiver. I just went to Si-Tex's webpage, and don't see the unit listed, so it must have been discontinued.

The unit had a small (4") LCD display and a ten key keypad as I recall.
 
Matt.. all these electonics were in stalled in 1985/86/87 according to the receipts and owner/operator manuals. The unit on the helm top is a Humminbird NS 10....the big viewing display starboard on the foot rest is for the Si-Tex Radar....the one below the Humminbird is a Interphase DC-2000 fishing Loran that just displays the Lat. & Long.( this is the unit i thought was old style Loran, the operation manual explains what Loran is...the one below that is a Interphase 20/20 Dual Video Dept Sounder....all old stuff but it still works. I'm going miss Loran-C, AGAIN. I used Loran-c on my charter boat everyday for about ten years. I still have hot spot fishing numbers in my mind. So much so that this past summer I dug out the old Si-tex EZ7 out of the box and put it on C-Lover. The numbers are still dead on and caught a lot of fish using the old numbers. In my old Loran numbers book I have about 1200 good fish spots and only have about 100 of them converted to GPS.
 
Some of the GPS units allow you to enter the old Loran C numbers and it will do the conversion for you. Furuno comes to mind, but I thinks others may as well.
 
Loran frequency is 90 to 110 Kilo Hertz--in the long wave spectrum, below the direction finding or Diff GPS frequency. You can use the same antenna in a diff GPS (but most of us use WAAS today). It may be used for long wave reception (but little left there currently of interest). The antenna has a "coupler" or coil to bring the relitativley short whip to the frequency utalized for the Loran.
 
Well it was a nice weather day here so went out and removed my beloved Si-Tex EZ7 Loran. It's been a good friend. I almost want to cry. I think I'll mount it on the living room wall :love I just can't bring myself to tossing it into the trash.
 
Hello all you pessimists. Before you throw your Lorans in the trash can, you can give it to me. :wink:

This optimist has heard rumors for many years, they were closing down Lorans. I already know that they are not going to tear down those transmitters. Logic tells me that the new president, in less than three long years from now, will turn those Loran sights back on with E-Lorans. They have to have a back up system for the GPS. It is very very expensive and time consuming to replace a satellite. Our current president is so busy returning campaign money, with interest, that he has lost all logic.

For commercial and sportfishing, Lorans are number one for the needed accuracy. Furthermore, those Loran transmitters would be very difficult to knock out. Europe and the other countries bordering the oceans are preparing to update Loran-C's to E-Lorans. I expect pressure from shipping and commercial fishing will turn this around.

The planet is now three inches off it's axis due to the earthquake in Chile. GPS's will gradually become inaccurate.

Think Loran-C might get a little respect now?

Jamming device would possibly work for the situation, but you need to check local regulation first before getting a device of the kind

We'd all better pray that GPS is really, really reliable. Congress had approved a bill that requires the US to switch to a GPS based air traffic control system, as opposed to using radar. This will allow airplane to be packed closer together and descend steeper. In addition the FAA has now decreed that all foreign landing at SFO must use GPS.

So, boats will float serenely on through a momentary GPS outage, but those closely packed airplanes in a steep approach might not.
