Lewmar Windlass Field Repair

Hello all,

I'm in a bit of a bind. I have a Simpson Wallace (Lewmar) windlass. I'm at anchor at Couverden Island about 30 miles SW of Juneau and when I went to pull up the anchor, I heard a pop and most of the electronics went out. I thought I'd blown a fuse, but they all seem to be good. All the electronics are back with a simple turn off and on of the accessory switch.

My guess is that the solenoid is out.

Is that something a complete idiot (me) could fix in the field, or do I need to pull everything in by hand and head for town?

Thanks!

That windlass comes out of the box with a 50 amp circuit breaker that is supposed to be installed in the main power feed to it. Maybe you already know about that and have checked it, but if not you might want to look for it and see if it is tripped. It should be a Blue Seas brand breaker that looks something like this.

The image shows the breaker in the tripped position. To reset it, the little black lever needs to be pushed up.

Mike, you're a life saver. I checked it once, but upon closer inspection saw that it hadn't reset properly. That's a lot easier than pulling 50' of chain in by hand and running through the storm back to Juneau.

Again, my thanks from Alaska.

Best,
Paul

Not a bad result from your first post to the forum, eh?

I'm just a boatless lurker, but I realized the value of C-Brats long ago for any questions nautical...

Paul,

While you're in the "neighborhood," consider going on out to Elfin Cove. It's probably one of my favorite places in all of Southeast.

Glad your windlass breaker got reset!

From your msg to C-Brat's, I guess we can assume that you have cell connectivity at Couverden!

Are the public "floats" still there, and how are the horsefly's?

Keep an eye peeled for Jay and Jolee (C-Dory "Hunky Dory"). They launched at Skagway a few days ago and are probably somewhere around the Icy Straits about now.

Best,
Casey
