LED Cabin Light

I ordered a LED light: 12V 63-LED WARM WHITE Marine RV Auto Camper 1156 BA15S. $15/ea.

I'm a great fan of anything that reduces battery draw. When I found out about the LED light above, I ordered one for the cabin lights.

Got it today and installed it. Indeed it has 64 LEDs and looks somewhat obscene. However it fits the cabin light fixture. Note that there's a right and wrong way to install it. Incandescent bulbs work with either pin positive, but a LED needs positive to it's positive, etc. If it doesn't turn on, remove it, turn it 180 deg and reinstall it.

The light output is about the same as the incandescent bulb or a little less. I put it over the sink and if Judy complains I'll go back to the incandescent bulb.

Since the cabin lights have never been a big battery draw for us (early to bed, early arise, etc., etc.) I don't think I'll get any more.

Sounds great. I don't often use the cabin lights either, but I have thought it would be a good idea to convert to LED by using bulb replacements instead of fixtures.

Care to say where you ordered your light from?

I replaced all 3 incandescent interior light bulbs with LEDs from Cruising Solutions: Model # G4-10P-WW-SP. $25 each. You also need an adapter from the bayonet fitting to the 2-pin LED. I have had these lights on my sailboat for a while, and I really like them. Just the right color temperature, not too blue like some other LEDs.

Also, here is another discussion of LED lights: Replacement LED cabin lights. It's the original thread.

Boris

I ordered two from the link in the other discussion. Those were only $12.99 each. They didn't fit my fixture in my CD22. (Only a single pin in the base.) but they fit the fixture in the RV just fine and work great.

Hey, flrockytop, hi there...

I also ordered the wrong bulbs from that vendor because of reading one of the original posts and then not being careful enough to check my newer boat for the same fixture type. The vendor is being very good about swapping out the bulbs for the ones he sells that have the dual pin bases we need.

I have four on order. Two of the 63 LED version and two of his newer 24 LED version. They're supposed to be about the same brightness. I should have them in a few days and I'll report on the results. I figure if I like the light color better on one type I'll put those out in the cabin and put the others in the V-berth.

OK,

I got two of these

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/12V-63-L ... 1e5ed8eb5b

and two of the same thing but with 24 of the newer SMD LED style ones he sells also

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/24-SMD-H ... 726wt_1167

Both types are working great and are equal in light output and color as far as I can tell by eye. They're a little whiter than the yellowish incandescent bulbs, but not a scary blue/white like some bright LED's I've seen.

If your fixtures use bulbs marked "1004" with two contacts in the base, then these are the bulbs for you. If you have different bulbs, you can search for your bulb number on that website and he probably has them. He's been really great to deal with.

These are rated 30% of the current draw of the old bulbs.

OK Jeff,

Thanks for the information. I think I'll try a couple of the 24-smd one. I am sold on the leds every since I put the LED anchor light on. That's the one that the guy in Fiji sells and Steve (Seaspray) has. I can't believe how bright that light is.

Does that light fit into the factory Anchor light post? Perko, I believe?

Thanks,

I bought a taller Universal Fit anchor light post for my boat because I often have the kayak up there and I needed the extra height. The new "Universal Fit" post is made by the same manufacturer as the standard post and guess what...

The threads didn't match. I had to machine a custom collar to mount the dumb thing. sheesh...

Anyway, it's not super bright. I'd like to upgrade it a little. I'll have to open it up and see about adapting one of these super bulbs.

I picked up a couple of battery powered LED lights from the checkout counter at Office Depot of all places. They were $4 each and use 2 AAA batteries. They are push on push off and have 3 LED lights, amazingly bright. Put one over the stove for additional light and attached the other behind my head in the V-birth for reading at night.

I also keep an assortment of headlamps around and other battery powered LED lights, way more bang for the buck if you use Rechargeable batteries I think.

Since our dink overhangs the anchor light socket I place and all-around LED tent lantern up there on dark spring and fall nights, I think it’s brighter than the incandescent marine one and lasts all season on 4 AA batteries.

Hi Harvey,

I tried to go back and find the thread where Steve talked about the light an gave a link to buying it. It did not find it. But to answer your question, NO. It is a self contained unit. The guy actually built the thing inside a PVC cap. I think its about 1" maybe a little bigger. It is completely sealed. I happened to have a standoff on my radar arch. I just put the light up there with some 5200 and fished the wire through the radar mount. The light the guy sells looks a little "homemade" but works fantastic. It also is a little pricey at around $40 but I would do it again. When I was on my Texas ICW trip, I had several tug boats ops comment on being able my light very well. I am in the middle of another project right now. When I get free I'll get some pictures and also try to locate Steve's post.

Harvey, I ordered an LED bulb for my perko anchor light. After two attempts, I came up with the bulb that works.
It is Bulb dbl Bay LED GE 90 # 1-10317816 that I purchased at West Marine for the fabulous price of $49.99.

I would recommend that after you order the bulb (as they didn't have it in stock), and it arrives at the store, take your anchor light post to the store and insert the bulb. You will find that the bulb is considerably larger than the standard perko bulb. The LED bulb touches the top of the perko housing cap and makes it a bit difficult to screw the cap back on, but it is "doable". I now carry the standard perko bulb that I removed as a backup.

(This was the second attempt at finding the proper LED bulb. Someone in another post had given two different numbers for replacements, but they did not work. This one does.)

Having a LED anchor light is wonderful!!! You can leave it on whenever it's overcast, dark or even light without worrying about draining the battery.

And a legal anchor light at that.

I bought a Perko/Dr. Led light from WM, and it just fit into the Perko globe. However, after I bought the light (also at $50,) they discontinued it. Glad DaveS else found the right light.

Interesting. Any one else experience this?
For the anchor light I used the GE90 Star mentioned but felt it was not as advertised; the distance from base to light source is different than the GE90 incandescent. To correct this I raised the plastic lens with a modified abs plumbing fitting which moved the center of the Fresnel lens back in line with the light source. This might not pass muster with the lawyers but just hold the lens over the bulb at night and move it up and down and the difference is dramatic when the lens and bulb centers line up.

Also:
It's the same one. Defender has them for $41.99.

Yep, that's the one. Glad to see that they've only come down $8 in 3 years. It did fit in the Perko fixture. It is sold as 2 nmi light, which makes it a legal light. The others I saw didn't claim to be 2 nmi lights. Small point, but if I'm going to invest in a safety item, I want it to meet the requirements.
