Lake Tahoe

Hi all, we’re on our way to Tahoe for a few days (via Berkeley and the bay). Any concerns about non-copper bottom paint on the lake? I have a semi-hard (hybrid) paint which is a few seasons old but still in pretty good condition. I can’t find any restrictions beyond copper prohibition.

Also, any suggestions as to launch ramps? We’ll be up near Carnelian Bay. I can’t find any affordable slips or mooring balls at this late date so will launch and haul out the same day. Any tips on where to find a slip or mooring would be great!

Thanks!

Matt

Hi Tortuga!

Lake Forest boat ramp near Tahoe City (close to Carnelian bay) is a good option, there is a large courtesy dock and decent parking. Parking does fill up on weekends so make sure to arrive early. Launch fees have jumped in the last year which is unfortunate. I believe Tahoe Vista (close to Carnelian bay) has a small boat ramp as well.

I launch out of Sand Harbor near Incline Village. It's a bit farther from Carnelian Bay but not as crowded and on one of the best, most scenic beaches on Tahoe.

I can't comment on non-copper bottom paint on the lake as I'm not aware of any restrictions.

Lake Forest and Sand Harbor are both good ramps. Sand Harbor is way better protected during windy afternoons. I believe Vista is closed, but there’s a shallow ramp in King’s Beach, which should be fine because the lake is full. Again, if the forecast is for afternoon wind (almost always), I would go to Sand Harbor. As a caution, if the forecast is for strong wind (small craft advisory), DONT GO OUT ON TAHOE.

Good luck with a bouy. The only place I know where you might get a short term bouy on short notice would be Homewood Marina, over on West Shore, a bit of a drive, especially in the height of summer tourist season.

You should be fine with your bottom paint.

It is a BEAUTIFUL year in the Sierras this year, ENJOY!
Check out Sierra Boat Co in Carnelian Bay for world class wooden boats. And actually now that I think about it, they MIGHT have a spot at a guest dock for a couple nights, if you’re lucky.
