June 20 we will be camping at Sunset Crater in AZ with kids (our annual gathering - might 'kidnap' a few kids afterwards and head to Jackson Lake and Yellowstone. Would sure enjoy seeing you folks up there-thanks for the invite - we'll let you know.
 
Thought I would bring this back to the top with a book recommendation for those coming to Lake Powell. Boater's Guide to Lake Powell by Michael R. Kelsey...along with the Stan Jones Boating and Exploring Map of Lake Powell...are two essential references while cruising Lake Powell.

Hi,

My family kayaked there for 5 days one spring break and loved it. The campfires and hiking were fun previously and I am sure are now also. I am hoping to join the Brats of these years!

Do you usually tie up near shore or anchor out? Do any of you bring your dog?

Anchoring would be what ever your preference. The dogs do like to go to.

Most of the Lake Powell trip for Diana and me will be socializing, exploring and photography... That said, I feel that a fishing rod should come along, too. Any recommendations? Downriggers (preferably not)?

We are planning on leaving Canby late on 9/18, to arrive at LP on 9/21, then to rendezvous with CBrats on Tuesday in Forgotten Canyon. I am thinking that Bullfrog might be the marina of choice. Anyone care to buddy up on the trip down? It might be a nice insurance policy if there are any kind of mechanical issues on the road. I've already got my deer this season (with the side of a F250) so hopefully that won't happen again. BTW, the deer was fine, the truck was hurt.

For a route to SLC, has anyone in the PNW considered dropping down into Nevada at Winnemuca, then picking up I-80 there? Kinda barren country, but beautiful.

Lots of fish Small mouth, large mouth, crappie, blue gill, walleye none of these would require down riggers. Stripers could be deep but, you could jig for these using Wally lures. If you found a school of fish 60 feet down then the down rigger would be nice. If you would like fishing info for Lake Powell just watch the fishing board www.wayneswords.com the fisherman there are more than willing the tell you where when and what to use. They are a great bunch of people.
 
Janda and I are coming to Lake Powell(LP) on Sept. 13th to join up with the LP group at Wahweap. We have a 16ft cruiser, the See /Saw. We hope to be able to go out with you all. We are newbiesa at power boating. Any instructions that we need to get to signed up with you all? And we could use all the suggestions you have on what to bring and do before getting there. I guess you can tell we are from the flat land of Texas.

Lyle & Janda...glad to have you along...See Saw has cruised with us before on Powell...just put her in "automatic" and she will know what to do!
Get the Stan Jones map. Have an idea of your fuel consumption...maybe some extra fuel...the gas pumps are a ways apart on Powell...with lots of long canyons in between. Plenty of provisions. Keep in mind we will likely have a thunderstorm or two...so some protection from brief but possibly heavy rain...and wind. Chairs for the beach campfires...Ivory soap for your lake bath...
I'll be launching mid day Sept 17th...meet up with us there or later at one of the rendezvous mentioned in earlier posts.

Just kinda wondering...with the elevation of some near 3600 feet above sea level, with the loaded boats.... do folks need a bit different prop set up to allow the motors to get to/remain in the recommended RPM range...or do ya just putter around at lower and slower speeds?

Never boated at 3600 feet.

Maybe some day, some way... I will end up there.

Two trips out west towing home...and the timing just did not work...yet.

Chris, does your recommendation for extra gas include CD22s? I typically carry one 3 gallon tank for the kicker, but can toss in a few more.

Also, do you recommend bringing the curtains for the camperback? I had planned on leaving them home and just using the top...

Byrdman...you can bring either boat...makes no diff!
For whatever reason...the 25's really suffer at 3600'+. The smaller boats don't seem to suffer much of a loss...I loose about 200 RPM on my 22. The 25's seem to loose a bunch...trouble planing even. I think if it were me I'd go down 2 prop sizes for Powell if I had a 25.
Grab a boat and come on out! Mike and Brenda would love this cruise too!
 
Steve...the 22's are usually OK fuel wise...unless we get real adventurous and do the San Juan or something...although with the low water levels of late it only goes back 35 miles or so. Might have more water this year so it could get close...at high water the San Juan can be a 100+ mile round trip from the main channel. Depending on how the 16's are set up...range could be a problem.
Curtains are not essential...I don't even have the top. We will usually have a thunderstorm or two...and they can get pretty heavy at times. If you want to secure the cockpit...might want to have them along.
 
After a little thought- looks like we'll wait for a Powell cruise at a later date. :(
Instead of dragging the boat to the lake, we decided to use this vacation to head on over to Texas to visit my daughter. :D

We just changed our plans to come a week earlier to be able to hook up with folks better. We will be leaving Fall City Friday afternoon on September 11th and spending the night at the Yakima Walmart. Next night the 12th would probably be Jerome, ID, Walmart. Not sure for the night of the 13th, as far as we can comfortably get so we can arrive at Bullfrog and be on the water before noon on Monday the 14th. We would then probably be pulling out on the evening of the 24th or the morning of the 25th so we would have three full travel days to get back home.

Coming down from Washington State, Bullfrog is about 100 miles shorter distance than Wahweap and avoids a mountain pass, so that is where we are heading. We would miss the group launching at at Wahweap but hook up at Oak Canyon on the 19th and Forgotten Canyon on the 22nd (these are dates our fearless leader Chris has established to meet up).

Daydream just got its (expensive) engine service earlier this week and the Titan is getting (expensive) new tires today, so we should be good to go!
 
Pat, I just read your post about going for tires. I just put a new set on Mooseaboo (my diesel truck), and went with Toyo's from Les Schwab. They gave me an allowance for the tires that were on the truck, so it made the deal a little less bitter. I did notice that Costco has their Michelins on sale. For my truck it would have been about $800, which is what the Toyo's went for after the allowance.

The reason I didn't go with the Michelins is if there is a problem on the road, you have to bring the defective tire in to a Costco. For most of the area we normally travel, there is a LS Tire in most towns of any size, so we stayed the course.

Hope to see you and Patty at Lake Powell. We are still planning on leaving around 9/18 or 19.

Before you buy any tires from Costco-- check them against tires outside of Costco---- they are not the same tire.
I used to buy my tires from Costco for my work truck, not any more- I got "tired" of returning them.
