Lake Mohave Cruise Feb 12-16

Steve,
Eggs - Hot
Coffee - Hot

I'll drive myself to work on Thursday so I should be home at about 1500.
Will go through the boat today.

I'll bring a folding table and a canopy also.

Steve, just out of curiosity, What plating on the rotors. I've never heard of plated rotors: bike, car, truck and now trailer. Why would they plate them, and why wouldn't the plating flake off?

I put Bendix ceramic pads on the Toyota, and the rotors are just plain cast iron.

Boris

P.S., The Honda's disassembled, so we're home for the winter.

I have seen rotors cad plated...and yes the plating on the surfaces of the rotors go's away quickly, but the remaining surfaces of the rotors remain rust free... this is especially common on ventilated rotors...

I really like the idea of stainless steel rotors.... expensive but sure would not rust...

I still have drum brakes...and those suckers are real rust balls... in the near future I will need to replace the units with disks..

Boris, Joel, I have a bit more info on the rotors now.

I called it a plating, simply because it is such a smooth (and hard) surface for the disc pads to press against, but are probably just lathe turned surfaces. They are cadmium plated, I believe the whole rotor is. Here is a picture I took just now to illustrate what looks like a surface plating breaking off the base metal, just looks that way. These are 7 yrs old and I've always rinsed them with fresh water after every trip.

I also called Pacific Trailer today, asked if they sell SS rotors yet? They said absolutely not, they still don't work, warp like crazy. Said they get cherry red (or very hot) while driving then they are suddenly dipped into cold water when launching. Well if that's the problem, not only do I have about a 10 minute setup time before launching, I could make a water spritzer from an old Windex bottle and do a few spray shots to cool them down before launching.

I don't buy it that all SS rotors are bad. Tie Down Engrg has sold them for many, many years, do they all fail? Pacific said Tie Down's are cr@p. Pacific only sells Cad plated rotors, they are only good for 2-3 yrs in the salt environment. I'd rather try the SS rotors anyway, at least try something different. I'll do some price comparisons and compatibility with ceramic pads which are considerably harder than the SS rotors.

And yes Joel, disc brakes even with iron rotors, are far superior to drum brakes, they work very well, have never locked up like drums sometimes do and begin to work very shortly after retrieving from the water unlike drums.

Well, I was looking forward to meeting many of you again, and some new people as well, but in comparing vacation time, weather, and some other distractions, I've decided to wimp out on this trip. It's just not adding up for me.

See you later.

Jeff

Darn Jeff....I was looking forward to seeing you... We are pulling out this morning.... Just went out and did a cloud scan....nope...all clear.. should be a nice day...on the web it only looks like a 20% chance of rain...great...I really don't care... we have just as good time in the rain...
Rox will pack a heavier shirt though... she is the funniest dog about rain...

Sure hope someone is there to show me about fishing... it's been years. but I packed several poles and what the heck...

See Ya'all there...

Joel, If its striped bass you are going after I can give you three was to go that are easy and work where ever stripers are.
1) Flat line troll a broken back rapala behind the boat. This is the easiest thing to do. Just buy 6in to 12in broken back rapala in perch or trout colors with a big deep diving bill. Let out 200 to 400 feet of line behind the boat and troll slow. Point , drop offs, WAlls, channel mouths are all good spots for this. To slow and the lure will not run right ( make sure it is runing straight and off to one side) to fast and it will roll over again and again.

2) Catch some local bait minnows or a little sunfish. rigg aslip float, a swivel with a small weight just above it, then 2 ft of leader then a live hooked bait. Thru the lip or thru the back under the back bone. Then toss it out and wait. Adjust the slip bobber up or down to match where the bait is. Just off the bottom is best. Then wait. You can tell when a bass is coming because the bait will try to run. do not set the hook until the bobber goes under.

3) basic bottom bait rigg. sliding weight-bead-swivel-2ft leader- hook and some worm that have been inflated( keep them off the bottom) cast set in pole holder, real down the slack and wait. Great for shore fishing at night while b.s.ing around the fire.

Hope this helps and good luck. Snowed here half the day yesterday.

Well we are running a little late but we are here. Its about 8:25 and we are tied up at Katherine Marina. I can't figure out how a couple of retired folks can't get organized enough to show up on time but.....
Hopefully tomorrow we can catch up with the rest of the Mojave group that has arrived on time. We are calling on channel 16 and on 69. Somebody let me know if everyone else has cancelled or if I'm calling on the wrong channels.
Cheers
Ron

How in the world did I miss this one? We should have had a calendar entry, announcement and signup list done a long time ago. I am sorry. It's too late for the signup list, but I can still get the discussion front and center on the home page events list if you want. I can also get the photo album ready for you (already did). Sorry, sorry, sorry.

Have fun!

Mile don't beat yourself up (nor Bill either), this just came up 5 weeks ago, I just looked and don't think anyone asked for a signup sheet (sorry if I missed it). I think everyone conneted so, no harm, no foul..

Just wish more of us could have made it!

Charlie

We had a super time....weather was good, and the water was wonderful...
Sue and I had to leave on Sunday as our son had emergency surgery in Reno and Sue and I had to come be with him....we will need to stay with him until he is able to get around on his own... so we may be here a week to a month..or even more...no idea... snowed on us coming home.. but this morning I need to find a place in Reno to park the boat....

SEA3PO

There were 5 boats: Chris on Rana Verde (22), Susan and Joel on Sea3po (22), Pat and Steve on Tee Ten (19), Ron and Ann on Meander (25)--from Canada, Roy and I on Water Lillie (22).

To supplement what Joel said, twas a great time indeed! In spite of the poor weather reports the weather was great, Friday it sprinkled for a short time "after" dinner, we called it an evening and headed to our boats, the sprinkles quit shortly thereafter. Saturday was a picture perfect day, no wind, mirror smooth water and T-shirt temps. I have pictures to prove it! Yes Roger, hold your horses, I'll be posting.

The food was beyond outstanding. Dual Cobb grills going, wow. The tri-tip, lobster, snacks, salads of all kinds, were just great. Not a good weekend to be watching your weight...

To Chris, great job pulling this together, thanks. And to Roy, thanks for letting me tag along in your boat and keep Haley (yellow lab) company, you're a terrific host and captain.

I forgot to mention one little thing...it's not only the weather, surroundings, food and boats that make these gatherings so great, it's the PEOPLE and great company that makes them so special.

I've posted pictures here, enjoy, it was truly a great place to be in February.

Well we finally got to somewhere with a decent wireless connection. Great cruise. Thanks Chris for organizing it. And thanks to Tyboo for creating the album. I posted a few more pictures just know. We had a great time and decent weather. For those of us used to cruising the NW, cruising on a SW Lake is different and great. No tides, tons of coves and beaches, fresh water and sunshine! :smiled We had a great time and it was certainly worth the left turn at California! To bad we didn't get a chance to cruise with our on line mentors, El and Bill, but the folks we met at Mohave were absolutely great hosts and cruising companions. Thanks for sharing the lake with us Canucks. Chris you kept your record intact by finding those Big Horn just in time on the last morning. Steve, you make one mean tri-tip on that Cobb, and Roy, that lobster was great. We don't have any up our way. Great salad from Susan and Chris makes a mean wild rice dish. Did I mention that this was a spontaneous pot luck. Can you imagine what it would be like if it was planned? C-Brats are great. We were tempted to stay extra time on the lake after everyone heading home but rain and lack of groceries caused us to head off on Monday. Hope everyone had a safe trip home and thanks again for inviting us.
Here's a picture of desert boating.

More pics in the album.

I just have to add a couple more pictures showing a very clever anchoring technique that Joel on Sea3PO uses. Apparently with great success. He calls this his Mohave set. Used mainly during his lake cruises.
First, use plenty of scope....
Sea3PO_2.sized.jpg

The dogs help to pick the good holding ground but are really a bit of overkill and not really neccessary to the success of this technique.

2nd, be sure to set anchor securely....
Sea3PO_Anchor_techniqe.sized.jpg

According to Joel he gets a very good set using this technique and rarely has his anchor drag. However he sometimes has a bit of trouble retrieving the anchor using only the windlass!
Thanks for sharing this technique Joel. I'm sure many other C-Brats will try this anchor set technique with great success.
Cheers
Ron

Ron -

So glad you made it over to Mojave - a bit different than cruising up Canada way. Your pictures are great.

We were sure sorry to miss you, but we had to take care of a med problem - all is well now and it is good that we stayed and got it cared for. We should be able to get off and going again soon.

Where to now for you folks? Lake Mead is close by, and as weather warms offers good cruising. Then Powell? Just some ideas of good SW cruising. Bon voyage.

Just thought you guys might want to know. I posted on C-Dory sightings, but I just returned from 3 weeks in Baja. Met up with Ron and Ann (Meander) at Puerto Escondido, Baja South. Ron broke out the Cobb and cooked a wonderful roast :thup. They are doing it as they said they would. :D . when we sat around the camp fire. They have done quite a bit of off shore cruising in the Gulf. It is beautiful down there. Ron and Ann wanted me to post a "hi" to all.
