Lake Champlain to the Saint Lawrence river

I wondered if anyone has gone from Lake Champlain up the Richelieu River and the Chambly canal to the Saint Lawrence river? We are thinking of starting off from the Statue of Liberty state park and heading up the Hudson river to the Champlain canal thru lake Champlain and on the Saint Lawrence river and end up near Sorel, Quebec. Seems to be about 400 plus miles. Part of the plan to pick off the loop in smaller chunks.

D.D.,

I have not made the trip you describe, but I look forward to hearing from folks who have. I have my boat on the Erie Canal in the Rochester NY area. I have thought about making a trip from Rochester to Lake Champlain and possibly to the St Lawrence. We have traveled to that area by car, and it is truly beautiful country, I think you would have a great time. When my wife and I get some experience under our belt, we'll look at making similar treks-and after I get my boat back from the Honda dealer!!

Yes, we did this route in our 43-footer as part of our Great Loop adventure in 2002. We loved the area so much, we went back to Lake Champlain with our TomCat in 2011 and just returned from a two-week cruise on the St. Lawrence through The Thousand Islands. The trip up the Richelieu in 2002 was both interesting and beautiful, and we especially loved Chambly. At Sorel we turned west and headed to Montreal. I think the only negative memories we have are from staying at Rouses Point, NY where the personnel at Marina Lighthouse were ill-informed, incompetent and rude. But that was more than 10-years ago, and hopefully they're all gone. Other than that, it was a terrific trip that we might even do again...so enjoy!
