Hi All,

I am new Dory owner this season. Love the boat, as does everyone in my marina. I am still not used to everyone pointing at me, I think something is wrong!!!! FYI there are not a lot of C Dory's in my part of the L.I. Sound, very rare to see one. I dock in a sea of Grady Whites, and have definitely converted a few captains. I am enjoying the sun coverage I get from the Cruiser, but am now looking to cool down. I was going to buy a portable AC unit from Walmart or Costco, as I already have the Honda 2000 Genny. I then stumbled across this little, light, cheap fan cooler:

I was wondering if anyone has this, or has seen it. Looks too good, and easy!!

I bought one several years ago. Since got rid of it. Didn't work! Idea sounded good anyway.

I had saw an ad on that kooleraire a while back. Sounded like a cheap way to stay cool. Maybe our cabin was too hot, I don't know. But it just seemed to put humidity in the air, not cooler air. Perhaps if you were just blowing the air right on you....not unlike those fans that spritz water in your face! Was a great ice melter though! Colby
 
Reminds me when in college, one year it was very hot when I was studying for finals. We went out and bought several 25 lbs blocks of ices which we put in tubs and turned our fans on them, as we sat on the other side.

Unfonately the "Kooleraire" does not work well. You can run the 5,000 BTU Wal Mart AC unit on a Honda EU 1000i. You can also adapt or by a fuel tank of 6 gallons to run the Hondas all night long if necessary.

The RV Airconditioners are better in that you don't have to boost them in and out of the front opening window. However, since heat waves don't last that long in your part of the world, the small window unit should work well.
 
The key words in their ad is "evaporative cooling". That means that water is evaporating, sucking up latent heat and cooling the air. AND increasing the humidity. Does Long Island have the same humidity as the Mohave Desert in the summer? I thought not, so you'll be going from 85% humidity to 90%.

I used evaporative cooling east of LA years ago and came to the conclusion that air conditioning was much better. Invest the $120 and enjoy the summer.

I can't comment on the AC, but even in the PNW where the C-Dorys come from I have been shocked by the amount of attention my boat gets. when I am towing down the road I see people tap eachother to look as we drive by. I am constantly checking to see if maybe I'm dragging my outboard, or grandma, or something, I mean why else would everyone point and stare? :mrgreen:

the cabins are nice. as my wife put it, a ski boat is great but when you are burnt you have nowhere to escape the sun!! we take refuge often :beer
 
The most frustrating and dangerous thing one has to endure trailering a C-Dory is the guy or gal that gets in the lane next to you and slows down to your speed so they can get a better look. Then they just sit there. I then have to slow down even more to allow enough room in front of me because I no longer have an escape route to the lane next to me.

Love the support from this forum. I went to Walmart, they didn't have the Frigidaire 5k Mini AC in stock so I bought one online from them for $123.00 delivered. I will hump it down my 90 degree/ 150 stairs at my marina this weekend before the heat/humidity cranks up. The "ghetto style" window AC unit will really give them something to point at!!!!

So just curious, how will you mount it? I've seen some RV style mounted on roofs. I've even seen one that was placed in a removed rear window. I know there are some (expensive) marine units that mount in the berth hatch as well. Just wondering if there are other methods. I wonder if there are any kind of small units that can just sit inside?
 
Most of us just put the 5,000 BTU Arctic King (Brand may vary) in the opening front window. You may need a small piece of plywood under the unit, but you want it to slope forward. I made a Sunbrella "gasket" which snaps on the window frame, and then tucks around the AC unit to keep any air and rain out. I also put the foam plumbing wrap for 3/4" pipe around the sides and upper part of the window to seal the edges.

There are also some semi self contained units which have a dryer type of hose which exhausts the hot air out a window or door. These are more expensive, and I think harder to store and more in the way inside of the cabin.

We have taken the temp of the 25 down by over 20 degrees--more with the 22. with the 5,000 BTU Wal Mart unit

I also cut foil lined bubble wrap for any of the windows for the 22 (also use this in our RV for the Windshield or any windows in the sun). This bubble wrap is both an insulator and heat reflector.
