Kicker Steering / mount vs. Trim Tab clearance

Hi,

I'm getting a new 22 cruiser with a Honda VTEC 90 and High Thrust 9.9. The dealer and I thought we'd have the engine shop make an offset kicker mount to clear the trim tab and then have a connector link between the engines so the main steering would steer the kicker. Both have electric tilt and the engine controls will be together on a standard Honda dual throttle quadrant.

I want all this on the starboard side so I can still use the swim step on the port side, clear of the hoses, cables, etc.

The engine shop is starting to think the idea isn't going to work out. (no room, bad angles, ??) I'll go there next week to have a look. What are other people doing? I've been reading some of the messages here and looking at Cabella's and autopilots and remotes and .....

I used the "mini jacker" bracket to mount the 9.9 on my boat.
It worked, but it keeps the same angle as the transom and the cost is reasonable. A custom made one that would put the motor vertical would give you more clearance. I purchased the connecting rod from Cabella's. I am happy with that option. to install the rod, We made two bracket and installed them on both motors to give us the proper clearance for the cables and such.
I remove the rod when I am ready to tillt up the 9.9 and travel.
My set up is on the port side with the swim step on the starboard side but I dont see any reason you cant make it work.

I got all the ideas from others on the site that got this done before me so you will find lots of options as you brouse.

Jeff- I have the 90 Honda and 9.9 with the tilt. I did not need a bracket for this. Clearances are super close. I also have a photo in my album of this. I thought I would need a bracket as well but found that if I inverted the steering link I got the clearances required.

Also a tip for the 9.9..........It likes to be level when starting it.

that would be great, where did you mount your rod holders, I'm new to c dorys and everyone on the site has made me so paranoid about drilling holes that I haven't even mounted my rod holders yet.

There's a variety of ways to do rod holders. First, if you're going to be using downriggers, most riggers have a rod holder (or sometimes two) built into them (or the dual ones are usually in a base below the downrigger). There's really only one good spot on each side to mount a downrigger - e.g. on top of the gunwale so that the end of the downrigger when rotated aft is near the stern.

If you aren't planning on using downriggers, then either a transom bar or board provides space for mounting of rod holders. Here's an image of what I did on my previous 22'. The board has three rod holders on it (one being used for the cutting board) and the cutting board has one rod holder on it. If you have a rail installed across the transom area, that would also provide space to mount multiple rod holders.

Finally, the other convenient and obvious locations are on the inside of the gunwale about 1/2 way between the cabin bulk head and the transom. In all of these locations (where the riggers are mounted and on the gunwales), the holes are going through fiberglass only so there's no need to worry about sealing etc. Just make sure you use something for backing (fender washers, stainless or starboard plate, etc).
