Kicker Motors

As i understand it,in 1987 the transom on 22' Classic Anglers was changed to accept a kicker beside the main motor. In the 1987 and newer 22' Classic Anglers how was the transom beefed up to support the extra weight of the kicker and the main motor, was the transom made thicker or was stronger material used in the transom area. Hi Tug,

It's not so much that the transom was made stronger to accommodate a kicker, just that the shape of the aft end of the boat was changed (it's wider) and the motorwell made larger to accept twin engines or a main and kicker.

For time longer than I can remember the typical outboard transom has been about 1.5" thick and oft times that's two layers of 3/4" ply. I think that was about the same in the pre-87 boats and the post-87 boats.

All that is to say, the transom in the pre-87 boats could have just as easily accommodated a kicker (and did...usually on a bracket), the earlier design was just for a single main engine so that you could get right back into the corners of the cockpit (the first boats were definitely fishing boats).

Les.. thank you for the information, i definitely prefer the wider transom that accommodates the kicker than that of the kicker bracket. I put my 8 hp on the kicker bracket to try it out and for me it's a real hassel to raise and lower and start the kicker.I have the kicker up for sale. Tug

Tug,

You might want to consider a totally remote operated kicker.
I have a 9.9 HT Honda version on my present boat. It is totally operated from the cabin. Tilt, start, shift, throttle, choke, steer. It makes a great system.

Jack,

I know this is an old post, but can you offer additional information? Perhaps some pictures?

I have a 2006 22 Cruiser with a Honda 90 & a Honda 9.9 kicker. I am exploring remote controls for the 9.9.

Thanks,

Al

Here's a picture of the setup i would have if i had a newer Angler, remote control, power trim and tilt, electric start. I forget who's boat this is but it looks great . Tug

I have a 2006 Honda 9.9 with power tilt. I believe it to be the high-thrust model.

I seem to remember reading in the manual that it is equipped for remote controls. So the question is does Honda make a remote control that will mount beside the controls for the Honda 90? If so can anyone tell me the part number(s)?

I want to be able to start the 9.9 along with having power tilt, gear changing and throttle control.

Steering is not a concern as Les sent me a very detailed message on how to accommodate steering several years ago.

Anyone? :beer

C-Gypsy.......
On my 22' Classic I had a 1977 115 Johnson and a 1990 15 hp Johnson kicker. Both remotely controlled. I used two separate controllers, one above the other. Later I changed the 115 with a 90hp Honda and did the same thing.

My present boat has a 200hp Honda and a 9.9 Honda. I again used two remote control heads one above the other. It takes a little calculating and fitting but it works great.

The picture of the Yamaha set-up is really 1st class looking. The steering attachments appear to be homemade but look great.
Good luck with your installation.

Al,

I also have a '06 22 Cruiser & I had my local Honda dealer set up dual helm controls for both motors in the fall of 2010. Now the kicker is truly useful. They replaced the single engine control with a Honda BF8-BF225 Dual Top Mount Control-S Series. A second ignition and new Teleflex cables were needed as well as numerous parts inside the kicker itself. It was not a simple conversion & was $$$$. But it works great & I wish I had done it at the start. I think I can dig up the invoice with all the part numbers if you are interested. No photos unfortunately.

John,

I think that is exactly what I am looking for. And like you I am just trying to make my kicker useful. Right now it is just dead weight on the transom as it never gets used.

What size is your kicker? I looked at your album but did not see any pics that showed what size the kicker is (of course I may have missed it).

Did you have any problems caused by the amount of space between your motors?

Sorry for the plethora of questions!

When you have time I would appreciate learning approximately what the conversion cost.

Thanks in advance,

Al

Al,

My kicker is a Honda 9.9 w/ electric start & power tilt. It is a little bit tight between the two motors, but so far no problems. The SS tie bar allows either motor to be up or down & each can turn from lock to lock. Works real slick! I looked up the invoice & the total cost was $2573 with parts just over half. The invoice listed description & cost for each part, but no part numbers. :sad Hope this helps.

John,

I'm not certain but I think you just became my best friend!

My 22 Cruiser has the Honda 90 and the Honda 9.9 with electric start & power tilt like yours.

Nick on Valkrie can attest to the fact that I've been looking for a setup like yours for several years. I've been told several times it can't be done. And having one motor down while the other is up? Outstanding!

I won't bug you too much right now, but I would appreciate knowing which tie-bar you used, and I'm sure there will be many more questions!

So how soon do you plan to visit NC with your boat? I'll buy the beer (after I'm done taking pictures and notes)! :beer :beer :beer

Will PM you soon, don't want to bore everyone here with my questions.
