Kenyon stove

Roger,
Alcohol at hardware store. Have a PUNHER (Sweden) boat stove I bought at the boat store at the end of Palafox (Killingers I think) in the 1940s. Works great. Going to take it to the Antique Road Show. Don't step on a Sting Ray.
Best, Zelpha

I'm beginning to wish I had an Alcohol stove. Everyone that I've had worked great. I've still got an out coleman that will work with the stuff. I may have to break that out. I've been using the Cobb grill for full scale cooking and absolutely love that. As a matter of fact I have some ribs going right now, but when you just need to heat up some water the Cobb is not the thing.

Killingers at the foot of Palafox... Yes that has been a long time ago. How did you get past Trader Jon's ???

Marvin.. What kind of price did you get from WM? They did not have it in the store and I didn't ask if they could get it. Being Sunday, the crew working today weren't not the sharpest, they didn't even know what I was talking about.

Roger

Kenyon is one of the many names for a butane stove made in Korea. West Marine is the most expensive place I found to buy those butane cartridges, but I've bought a couple there. Can't use the Wallis in hot weather.

Some hardware stores have them (random.) Cabellas has them (sometimes.) About $2 a can. Can't mail order them because they want $20 for haz shipping. Keep looking, and buy a lot when you find them.

Roger I think they were $4.99 which is high but its been the only place I've found them.

I don't recall exactly where we found butane cartridges, but I think it may have been Fred Meyer's. You can probably find them at kitchen stores, too. A lot of caterers use the stoves for their events.

I have a Kenyon butane stove and regularly find fuel at big sporting goods stores for about 2-2.50 a can. No problem thus far. I usually buy at "Joe's"

I did find fuel for that stove at a better price at Costco in their
commercial outlet in Fife Wa but by then I had already pitched my
stove over safety issues. The canisters would freeze in cooler weather
and then leak. I made a stove to fit in the boat and used standard 16oz
propane canister. I use 4 inch plastic pipe for a storage of extra
containers and is mounted to be vented overboard. Just hose clamped to
the overhead cover uprights.
The Costco deal came in like six or ten to a sales unit.

Thanks for the link Tom 28 cans isn't really that much I went thru 4 cans recently on a 12 day trip and I was doing some of the cooking on my propane grill. I put in and order.

I put in and order to the link Tom provided and the cans arrived in about a week so I'm set for a while. Like Tom said they were less than $1.70 a can.

Guess I just have to ask, why butane at all?
Makes sense for backpacking, but why for boating?

The gas itself is just as potentially dangerous as propane (heavier than air, and "settles"). But, the containers are thinner and much easier to puncture or corrode-through than disposable propane cylinders, plus availability is limited...propane is available everywhere, from every hardware store, home center, even in convenience stores some places.

Plus, butane is basically non-functional when it gets cold.

Am I missing something obvious here?

Good question. C-Dory is installing Kenyon butane stoves in the new boats instead of the old alcohol stoves. Of course you can spend $3000 and get the Wallas diesel stove. I haven't had and trouble with mine and freezing is rarely and issue in Florida
