Regarding the stink factor, that's due to the rubber sole of the foot bed. You might try one of those EVA type inserts to isolate your foot from contact with that rubber. Due to the open heel, however, I don't know how well it would stay put. They're cheap, though, and might be worth a try.
I like the Columbia Simbo sandal a little better because I prefer a closed heel along with the protected toe. Cabela's has them for $38 in their Bargain Cave here. Unfortunately, these are closeouts and they're down to having only sizes 9-1/2 and 14. One of 18 reviewers said that these stink as well, and they have the inserts, so who knows; some peoples' feet just tend to stink, I guess.
