Kayak Storage on Cabin Roof 22 Cruiser - what system?

Looking to add a kayak rack on top of our regular height 2011 22 cruiser. What system (ie, Yakama/Thule, or whatever) seems to work best? In particular, what grasps the cylindrical bar best and provides clearance for kayak rollers/saddles, etc?

Good question. There are several folks who carry kayak up top. I have some interest there too. Mean time, I had a take - apart arch built for over the splashwell, using my inflatable as a cockpit cover. At some point the aft arch will support a kayak and the front edge of the yak will be on the cabin roof on some sort of rack like what you are asking about. Interested in what your responses are.

Mine are Thule's with standard gutter mounts. Mines a high top.
 
we used inexpensive car top "rubber" mounts with straps attached to rails and then straps to secure kayak. it's a low tech solution and I was a little Leary about it. however it worked fine and we did the great loop and other trips with the yak on the roof without a problem.

I'm using standard Yakima rain gutter mounts and standard Yakima round cross bars. Works great. The rain gutter mounts clamp nicely around the round stainless roof rails. I've also added a Starboard marine lumber plastic (West Marine) flat panel (about six feet by two feet) on one side to mount my radar antenna. I have a set of plastic rod holders (rocket launchers) attached at the rear of that flat panel. It was all meant to be temporary until I made up a stainless assembly similar to the factory towers, but it's serving me well and I'm busy with other projects so I guess it will be there for a while.

I should post some pictures of my latest rendition, I think it's version 8.2. I have some plastic rod holder tubes mounted in the motorwell that the rear pvc pipe contraption slips into. For the front it's more pvc, I took some pvc Tee's and cut off about a third of the bottom of the run so they snap onto the hand rails, I throw a zip tie on it for insurance. I've loaded up the kayaks and headed down the freeway with no problems. If interested I could work up a recipe and pics
 
We don't have a system yet, but we do have the normal roof with a low radar arch. I am considering using one Yakima crossbar (gutter mounts) across the front of the roof, then just using one of the radar arch crossbars for the rear support. Then I can use those inexpensive foam rubber blocks that clamp on to a bar and have a 'vee' on top to cradle the kayak.

Of course this means removing the rocket launchers from the arch, but we won't use them...
