Just Missed a Real Trailering Disaster

What I was thinking about, was that maybe someone tried to abscond with C-Cakes in such a manner (and luckily they were foiled) and that maybe that was the cause of the loose nut. Long shot I know, but just thinking, that's all.

Ahhhh...roger...my mistake or misunderstanding of what you were posting.

Speaking of loose nuts......

I had the exact same thing happen with my 17 foot bayliner right by Grand Coulee Dam except the nut did fall off. I was pulling it behind my old dually with a camper on the back and NORMALLY could not see the boat back there ever. All of a sudden, I saw some sparks, and then saw the boat on the left side of the truck which was really not normal. Crazy as it seems, I waited until it came behind the truck and then lightly touched the brakes and it kissed the back of the camper bumper. I stopped on the side of the road with no damage to the boat or trailer, and only cosmetic damage to the camper bumper. We were lucky.....scary is an understatement to say the least. And you know what sucks....is that I tried to pry that SOB ball off about two months prior and nothing would budge that sucker not matter what. Now, I weld every ball on there I have.....it is worth it in my opinion.

A good rule of thumb is never re-use a hitch ball. Buy the best quality one you can find from a reputable trailer supply store.

What I meant to say is, if you change out your receiver don’t use a ball from another. I guy at a trailer shop once told me that once a ball in tightened down properly onto a receiver, if removed, don’t use it again. It would be like using a ball joint from a junk yard. He said the lock washer, nut and ball come as a single use item, not intended to be re-used.

You can get a trailer on or off the hitch even if the coupler lever is locked on the trailer and the receiver is locked to the vehicle hitch; with the proper size wrench/socket the spring loaded fork can be dropped out the bottom of the coupler. Don't ask me how I know this (you might ask Ric from Maine).
