Just Bought my First Motorcycle!

You should both have fun with those bikes.

I sure hope so...the Honda is a bit of a risk.

Reason being - it was originally sold as an off-road only model. A kit was added making it street legal in CA - an option that no longer exists down here, but those that had it done prior to the cutoff, are grandfathered in.

However, up in WA - no such options exists for bikes that were not sold from the factory, as street legal. Even though the Honda has a valid CA title, registration and street plates - WA won't let me register it as a street bike. Green sticker only - which sucks big time. The vast majority of the awesome offroad/trail riding in WA, requires a plated motorcycle...dirt bikes, are extreme second class citizens.

However, for once - politicians on both sides of the fence, appear to be making a rational decision. SB5800, a bill to allow dirt bikes to be plated in WA State once they've had necessary equipment added, has passed with nearly 100% bipartisan support - 46-2 in the Senate, 96-0 in the House. It's on the Gov's desk right now, it's expected she'll sign it any day now. If so - come 1/1/2012, adding the proper equipment to a dirt bike will allow them to be plated in WA, just as they are in many other states. Not only is this a common sense move - many dirt bikes have near identical street legal versions from the factory - but it's a big revenue generator for both the state and local businesses.

The state will benefit from greater licensing fees. Little if any additional costs will be born upon taxpayers, as the mandatory inspections for street legal equipment will be done by local motorcycle dealers - with a $100 cap for the inspection. Additionally, local WA motorcycle dealers/parts manufacturers will benefit from sales of equipment needed for these converted bikes to pass inspection.

For now, I'll just ride the Honda up there with CA plates...it won't be out enough to attract any attention, and I'll swap them out for WA plates once the option is again available.

the great thing about the newer color copiers is that you can scan almost any thing and print it in high gloss color to a vinyl sticker. I bought a pack of do it your self bumper sticker last year. so printing a vinyl reproduction of a valid licence plate and placing it over a old one or changing the color of the year and month stamp is very easy... or so I have been told...

Tom, you are such an outlaw...or so I have heard! No road riding for me, makes me picture cheese on a grater. Love the dirt bikes, I started when I was six and both my boys have as well.

KTM 200 EXC: Me, 46 yrs old

KTM 65 SX: Son, 8 yrs old

KTM 50 SX: Son, 6 yrs old

Nothing but 2-smokes for us, unless it's an outboard!!!

Seeing as I started the thread, I may as well keep it going, too!

I pick up my bike tomorrow; the weather has been too changeable to do much with it anyway. Temps will hit 80 on Sunday and I'll be torn between riding the back roads around home or washing and waxing Valkyrie, who really needs a good cleaning.

My Motoport Kevlar riding gear came last week and fits perfectly, which it should since it's custom-made. Also, our riding classes are in two weeks, right after Marcia gets home from a business trip to Texas. She is as excited as I am.

Regards,

Thinking back to what Da Nag said about getting the other half to ride, I tried that with my helper but, she said " I'm just happy to be a passenger". I even bought and restored this Yamaha some years back to hopefully teach her. It was perfectly her size. Sadly, I sold the bike to guy who destroyed it. But on the brighter side, I got all my lights changed to led finally on the KLR.
