Juneau Alaska info needed

Greetings Brats

My wife and I are joining another couple on a chartered 64" yacht this summer leaving out of Sitka and ending in Juneau. We will lay over in Juneau a day or so and looking for hotel and eateries that cannot be missed, and anything else we can see and do in a day.

I would love to do this run in our boat, but this is the intro for the wife sleeping on a boat, so needs to be a good experience.

When we were up in Juneau, we took a side trip to Glacier Bay, and also went up to Mendenhall Glacier. Those are the 2 best "things" I can remember. The rest is typical of a state capital and cruise ship stop.

Juneau is not that big of a town and I believe one is up there for the scenery. You might look for the humpback whales in Freidrick Sound. There is Mount Roberts Tramway.

Pel Meni is a funky little eat joint downtown that serves russian dumplings, it's a good place for lunch as you wander the town.

The Hot Bite at Auke Bay makes killer burgers and malts

I think Juneau is really kind of a dud, a half day or day is plenty of time to have your fill

Thanks Ken for the info, exactly what I was looking for, and interestingly enough the vessel we are going on is a Little Hoquiam.

Big Dave I'll excude the bigger boat comment, just cannot talk the wifr into buying a bigger boat, could not afford to fill the fuel tanks anyway.

Brian, Tracy Arm is definately on the list as is Taku harbor, Petersburg along with a few other spots.
 
While you are laying over in Juneau, go down to the main city dock and find the little wooden "tour boat" that is steam driven. The "Captain" is a local historian and will take you on a tour down the channel and tell you the history of Juneau. It is very interesting and fun. The boat is an actual steam driven vessel. Ida and I did this several years ago and the sights were fantastic. The story of Juneau, early Alaska, mining, logging, fishing along with stories of famous/infamous people was very interesting. Early hydroelectric generation along with early mine engineering standards for America were all started in early Juneau.

Sounds like a good trip. We are planning a trip from Jnu to Sitka and return this summer. I wish I could say that there were some can't miss eateries in Juneau but there simply are not. The Baranof is pretty good and the Hanger at the Wharf is a decent local hangout with a little atmosphere, mostly because its on the water. Never stayed at the Baranof Hotel but word is its pretty decent. There are lots of things to do here, mostly boat oriented but when you get on land, you could visit the Mendenhall Glacier N.P. There is a state museum downtown, numerous very good hiking trails. Juneau is a beautiful place and there is much to be seen just driving around. Most Juneauites try to avoid downtown in the summer due to the mass of tourists off of the cruise ships but a quick venture through is worth the trip I guess. I used to live in Juneau 30 years ago and liked "Beauty and the Feast" over in Douglas (across the channel from Juneau) - amazingly it appears to still be there!
 
While in Juneau last August a friend with a car, took us out the Glacier Hwy to the Shrine of St. Therese. It is a beautiful place and we were the only ones there aside from the caretaker. You will not be dissapointed. Check it out at www.shrineofsainttherese.org .
On the way back into Juneau, stop for a burger and milkshake at The Hot Bite at Auke Bay harbor. Yummy!
