Is there a way to change the hour meter reading?

Hello from Iowa,

I was away from our 19’ CD for a couple of weeks and upon return noticed that somehow the ignition switch was in the "ON" position, the Honda hour meter had gained somewhere over three hundred and forty hours.

Besides switching out the hour meter, is there a way to change the hour meter reading?

By the way, the engine started up fine.

but, in fairness, you should post the actual hours before the glitch so that you and future owners will know how many running hours are actually on the engines. I did that with my wife's 96 mustang. The speedo went bad and we could only find one with about 20 grand fewer miles on it. So I have a tag on the panel that indicates that 20 grand needs to be added to the odo reading.

There are only 2 terminals on both of the hour meters we've had on our boat, so I don't think that shorting could reset the stock Faria or replacement meter.

When we got our boat the meter was stopped at 85h and the owner said it had been seized for a while. When we got our 200h service, we found out the Suzuki was at 185h. We had to put the new one on a battery for a week or two to get to the correct hours.
 
Is anyone “absolutely sure” that the hour meter can be made to indicate zero?

If so, can the process be described specifically.

I said it before, but I believe if there are only 2 contacts, how could it be "shorted"? To apply power to the meter it needs a voltage drop across the 2 contacts. I'd assume it doesn't hold any power, so shorting wouldn't do anything. And if you short it while it's powered, you'll blow a fuse or mess with your batteries!

Now, if it has more than 2 contacts, maybe people are on to something...
 
Let's start by stating which engines/hour meter you are talking about. I assume it's a Honda meter on your 19' angler correct? Also, digital or analog?
 
Some hour meters will run backward if you reverse the polarity of the terminals. Not sure about the one you have. But it might be worth a try.
 
Instead of trying to find a way to change the hours on the hour meter, why not just note to a potential buyer, as you did at the beginning of this thread, that the key was inadvertently left on for some 300 hours and the hours on the meter do not reflect actual running hours. Figuring ways to jigger the hour meter seems to me to be the can opener for the proverbial can of worms.
