Some locals told me it was a native boat for netting in the apostle islands. Looked straight out of water world :)

Hmmmm.. All it needs is a .50Cal on the foredeck! :disgust

You see fishing boats like this all over the Great Lakes.

Whats the story on this design? Does anyone know what they are fishing for and why so enclosed?

Yeah,
It's a Lake Superior gillnetting tug, mostly after herring now days. Most of them began their lives as open vessels and then were later enclosed to make the bad weather on Lake Superior a bit easier to take. Note the large door, there is one on the other side as well. The long gillnets are brought in on one side, picked of fish inside the boat, and payed back out through the other side door. The boat travels side ways along the net. When finished the net is already pretty much reset. Some of these boats have wood or coal stoves inside as well. Lake Superior is one very cold work environment and the men that fish it are real inovative guys.

Thanks for the explanation, Tom and Dan. An interesting look at a regional solution to the cold water.

They caught my eye up on the lakes last year. Their total enclosure reminds me of the Coast Guard rescue boats.

Here's a link to a Web site by someone who's fond of these boats:

Interesting web site. I had to look it up because of the name. Could spend several hours there. Annals and gallery. Thanks for posting that link.

Silly me...my guess was that it was a semi-submarine loaded with cocaine...

They also use these boats on the bay of Green Bay to fish for white fish and perch.

Waterworld & Captain Ron are two of my favorite movies!

Learned everything I know about boating from those two documentaries...
