I was looking at places to launch in Barkely Sound and came across this information from the Port Alberni Port Authority.

"INSURANCE REQUIRED The Port Alberni Port Authority requires proof of vessel insurance with a minimum liability coverage of $2 000 000 limit and includes a 30 day notice of cancellation. This is mandatory in order to berth in Port Alberni Port Authority Marinas."

My insurance agent in Seattle had never heard of this requirement before. Not a big deal, as I have an umbrella policy of $2M, and it only cost a few more dollars to add the boat. But he had to figure a way to print out a "proof of insurance" card for my Home Owner/Boat policy that I could carry on board.

Several other BC Port Authorities have the same requirement. It is required for guest moorage and maybe even to launch if you temporarily tie up to the dock. I would have thought that I would have heard of this before. Anybody ever encounter this?

That requirement is for resident moorage in the marina and some level of coverage is commonly required for permanent moorage in the states as well. Nothing needed like that just to use the launch and park. We used the launch last year for a 5 day trip and it worked out great for a Barkley trip.

I know a lot of marina's require proof of insurance for a seasonal slip rental, but I have never heard of one being necessary to use a launch ramp.

The only time I have been asked to show proof of insurance was in Gananoque(St. Lawrence River). That was for a poker run though, so I think it was the run officials that required it not necessarily the marina.

I have 2m insurance for my permanent marina slip in Comox, BC. I carry a copy of my insurance on the boat. In many years of boating in Canada (and San Juans) I have never been asked to produce it. However, different marinas have different rules. Does not hurt for you to carry a copy. Not the whole policy, just the front page showing your liability.

When we get reciprocals at yacht clubs or even at some transient moorage, we're asked for registration and insurance. I'm pretty sure the Nanimo YC asked for those docs. State Farm includes insurance coverage for some distance above and below the US borders, so it's not a problem, unless you forget the paperwork. When that happens, I disappear, Judy smiles and somehow we get through.

I launched at Port Alberni this summer, and was gone for several days, and then retrieved. The gymnastics of getting to the dock, the right side at the right time, and in the right order was fun. Lots of local boats waiting for a tide turn to get on up the river.

I saw that sign, but did not park in the launch ramp parking lot while I was gone so figured I would see if they asked. I carry a proof of insurance on the boat so it would not be a problem IF THEY ASK.
