insurance rates/policy

The deductable for my stolen items with progressive was only $100.00 the deductable for the house policy that covers personnel items away from home is $1000.00 I don't even have to do the math. Best to get the extra coverage for the personal items on the boat thru progressive.

Most marine insurance specifies the waters for operation, when we got our C-Dory last year, Boat US quoted us a VERY high rate, ended up getting it with Allstate (all my other insurance is with them) and they charged me $316 a year and cover the entire USA. :dog
 
Just got the quote in from Progressive. The premium is obviously driven by the value of the insured boat, engine, equipment etc. So keep that in mind when you are comparing someone that says they are having there boat insured for $xxx. Also is it depreciated value, replacement value or some other value.

We are insuring the 2005 25, 150 HP Honda, and trailer for a total of $91,000 agreed value, $500 deductible, which is what it would take to replace the boat if it was destroyed or stolen.

The premium will be $550/yr. ( at $70,000 the premium would have been $479.

If the engine is stolen or falls off in 500 ft of water the policy pays for a new engine (less the deductible)
 
Anna Leigh, Your paying the same to insure your $91,000 boat with Progressive as I am paying to insure 17 year old Adeline with Travelers, yet HER agreed value policy is only $25,000. Sooo, I contacted Progressive and got a quote of my own. Notably, boats(including motor(s), trailer, and equipment) 15 years old and older are limited to $20,000 total. With that in mind I was quoted $440/year. That's $20,000 in boat,motor(s), trailer, and all equipment for $440/year. At that rate insuring a $91,000 package would run $2002/year. When I asked the agent to explain the difference all she offered was your different zip code. In other words, I'm quoted at a rate 455% higher because I live in Vancouver instead of Guemes Island.

I have Progressive, living on Whidbey Island, and pay $350/yr. Have you tried using Progressive on line for your quote? You could validate that it is your zip code that's doing it.(www.progressivedirect.com) -

Yup, it's pretty common.

I'm also with Progressive, just got my renewal. Haven't checked around yet, but last year they were the cheapest for an agreed value policy.

My rates are higher than David as well...$64K agreed value for $518/year. That's around $6/$1,000 of coverage for David, and around $8/$1,000 for me.

Obviously not an "agreed value" policy and no collision/comp offered. Bill, I boat all over the Columbia, ocean, and the sound. The Columbia is the least hazardous by far. So how to explain sky-high rates? Also, Adeline's stored here @ home and not moored. Safe and sound locked up inside my outbuilding 50' from my bedroom. Can someone with these great rates provide an agent I can actually speak to?
 
Lizzie Ann's insurance also is Progressive, through USAA. Agreed value of $63,000 for $390 a year. They were the best deal I could find. Boat US was out of sight, altho they keep tryng to get me back.

I may have insured my boat package to high?? but if something happens I won't be sorry. Insurance really sucks........until you need it. I do remember him telling me that after the boat is 5 years old things change. But I am not worried about that because I will be into a used Nordic or Camano by then.
 
My coverage is presently with BOATUS because their "U.S. COAST GUARD AUXILIARY" coverage is potentially advantageous as my boat is being towed on USCGA-covered missions.
I have not had PROGRESSIVE with my new (purchased in 2002 C-DORY) boat...however, when I owned an older boat (and had contracted with PROGRESSIVE because their rate was so good), their process with a damage claim because of hitting a submerged object (damage to the lower drive of an I.O.) was troubling. The first shop I contacted (because they had such a good reputation in the area) about repair commented that they had never experienced an insurance adjuster that was so hard to deal with. (This might be positive or negative, depending on how one looks at it . . .the adjuster demanded that "new" parts could not be used in the repair. It kept the costs of the repair down; the expected results of the repair, when a claim was made, might also be reduced!!?)
All in all, that result for me was "good" financially....however, if I had decided to keep that boat, the long-term consequences seemed to not be favorable for me.
In insurance...as with everything else...you get what you pay for!!!

Well, I got a reply from Progressive explaining how they endeavor to price their policies competitively with OTHER carriers, blah, blah, blah. FORM LETTER. They never even read my e-mail. Thank you for the link David . I sent Fritz a copy of my dec. sheet and look forward to hearing from him.
 
After almost 30 years in the Automotive Collision Repair Industry (OEM Parts Vendor), I can honestly say that when it comes time to cover a claim, most Insurance Companies do not have your best interest in mind. The larger “discount” firms being the worst. I have been with Pemco Insurance in Seattle for all my insurance for years. When we bought a used (2003) 22’ this fall I called my agent to add the boat. I believe I am paying about $259 a year for 50,000 coverage. I use an independent agent (Christopher Tagawa christopher@togawa-insurance.com ) because it gives me contact with a human, if I should ever need it. I have never had to use Pemco’s services, but it feels good to know they will be there if I need it.

Well, with all this talk about Progressive, I decided to get a quote for my 2006 CD 22. Plugged in my zip code and it said they don't offer boat insurance in my area. I'm still waiting for a final quote from my local agent but it will be close to $600 for a $48,000 boat.

Well, that certainly is an appealing thought, but maybe a bit extreme.

Certainly making this information available to the entire group is a wonderful idea. How do we set up a poll on the site?

I too am considering the purchase of a 2006 22' and this could only help.

Please keep in mind that for a poll to be accurate, we would have to see what the coverage limits are each person selected for their respective policies. Otherwise, the data wont be apples to apples with what others may be paying towards a premium.

Since my US Boats Insurance is due next month, I phoned my independent agent and asked about Progressive. The results were that I'll be getting agreed value (much greater coverage than previously) for $256 less than what I'd be paying US Boats for lessor coverage. Additionally, I won't be paying extra anymore for the cruising area that I choose as Progressive covers all inland lakes and rivers, coastal waters to 75 miles and Canada. Additionally, up to $2500 towing on the water!

Another GREAT reason to belong to the C-Brat Yacht Club... :smilep (Thanks for the "heads up" C-Brats!)
