I've been talking to Geico and there are LOTS of questions to answer for insurance on a 25.

Who do you have yours insured with ?

What is your liability limits ?

Do you tell them you use it as a boaterhome ?

Do you have a agreed value ?

On and on !
 
Hi Dave,

We have our boat insured with State Farm. We've been with them for years on other boats, had one claim years ago and they handled it promptly and to our satisfaction. They cover all over the US and up to 75 miles off shore with our particular policy. Runs about $670 per year IIRC. We have a "stated value" policy, also coverage on the trailer.

Geico balked when we told them that we planned to use the boat for an extended period in N.Y. canals this summer - said they couldn't cover us for an extended time up there unless we owned property there ?!?!?!//

Have you completed the Power Sqdn course or anything like that ?

Yes, I've done the Power Squadron Safe Boating course, but I also have a USCG 50 Ton Master License. State Farm does offer a discount with proof of completion of a safe boating course. If you haven't taken one, I'd really recommend it, regardless of the insurance. Lots of good information to be had there. State Farm wants to know where your primary boating is done, but had no restriction on where you use it in the US. Some insurance companies will write a rider to cover you for places other than your stated coverage... still, I'd rather not have to call to get coverage (and pay for) other areas.

I didn't check Geico, but when we checked around, State Farm better fit our use compared to BoatUS or Progressive. Others have had a different experience. Ask around in your area to see who is competitive.

Perform a search (located on the header of each page of this site). There have been several threads with numerous postings from fellow C-Brats about boat insurance, types of coverage to be sure to include and experience with different insurers. As for "Sea Shift", we carry Progressive and have it for "agreed value", and feel that we are very well covered. Also costs less for more coverage than when we had our insurance coverage through Boat US. (We still have vessel assist through Boat US however).

Absolutely, take some boating courses! Between boating courses and reading all the valuable information posted on the C-Brats, you can't go wrong. :lol:
 
Another good item about State Farm is that they not only cover you in the US, but that 75 miles also includes Canada and Mexico. When you figure how far into Canada you go, that covers a lot of trips. And you can go to Ensenada and still be covered. Though I'm not going to do that now.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm taking the Power Sqdn course - waiting for them to tell me where to test. I have earned a 25T Norwegian Masters but, it was 30 years ago and I didn't stay current - so this is a needed refresher. The only thing the 25T was good for (other than knowledge)was it cleared the way with the charter companies.
 
Check out BoatUS insurance. I'm paying about $360 a year for a '94 22.-- don't know if they're the cheapest but they seem reasonable and they don't seem to have these restrictions.

Hi-I've had two boats insured with boats U.S. for quite some time and they seem to be very reasonable. My regular insurance company whom I have several items insured with could not even come close to what I'm paying for the same coverage with Boats U.S. On the other hand I have never had a claim with them so I don't know how they are to deal with when it comes to paying out $$$. I would also check with Progressive. You are better off sticking with a company that is boat knowledgable. Just like with Classic cars certain companies know values far better than others. Rich
 
I've had two claims experiences with BoatUS and they were both excellent! Things happened fast and everything was taken care of to my complete satisfaction.
 
Lucky Day-- glad to hear that about Boat U.S, I've always wondered and hoped I wasn't throwing my money down the drain. Just seemed like to good of a deal when I compared them with other insurance company rates. Thanks for the input Rich in Riverside
 
Rich - Fiddlersgreen6 - The two claims were on two different boats. One claim was for substantial damage to my boat caused by a boatyard. In that case, the BoatUS adjuster worked with me in crafting a settlement paid directly to me by the boatyard. In the other incident, I was liable. At my urging, BoatUS bent over backwards to take care of the other boater with mimimum hassle for him, and they did so. The damage to my boat was also taken care of quickly and fully - at a shop of my choice. Hope there won't be anymore opportunities for them to come through for me, though!
 
I recently combined all insurances through one company, and my boat insurance dropped substantially. Home, auto, boat, umbrella liability are now all on one.
 
Have to say that while Boat US may not be the cheapest, what matters is how they treat you when you need them.

Our recent "ooops" was handled very rapidly, extremely professionally and they took care of every concern that we had.

As a consequence we have just renewed with them.
