Long time wannabe is getting serious about finally jumping in (head first, but checked for depth) and buying a C Dory. I was curious is there a preferred insurance firm? We have no tickets, no accidents, long time boat owner no claims. Thanks in advance and looking forward to participating in some Brat events!
 
Hi John,

I'd check with your auto/home insurance carrier to see if they offer boat insurance. We have had State Farm with our past three boats - the premiums seem fair, and the one time we did have a claim (storm damage on a sailboat), they were excellent to deal with. No doubt, others will chime in with their experience with different insurance companies.

I agree State Farm is good to deal with. I do fire and water damage restoration for a living hence i work with most insurance company ever day and State farm is one of the best in taking care of there clients.
 
Just as Jim, we have State Farm. And our only claim was also on a sailboat. But since we've become sedate C-Dory owners, we've got a clean record.

What I like about State Farm is the coverage area. They cover you into Canada, about 70 miles, which means that we don't have to get additional coverage, and down into Mexico as well as the Bahamas. And they throw coverage for Texas, free of charge. So you've got all the neighboring foreign countries covered.

You may not plan to go there, but if you ever visit the San Juan Isles, Canada's Gulf Isles are only a couple of miles away, and you don't have to worry. All good West Coast C-Dories go to the San Juans, one of the great cruising areas, and you'll want to go there sooner or later, so State Farm will have you covered.

I don't know about Texas, though.

I personally am not insured with them (I have a "yacht policy" with Ace) but many members swear by Progressive.

Progressive here for sailboat and TC255 and for automobiles (2). No problems, good rates (how can each one be cheaper than the others :roll:)

State Farm for us for both boats. We get discounts because of Safe Boating Class completion and our overall insurance is low because we insure everything (home, auto, golf cart, boat, life) with them. Always been great to deal with and I find their premiums reasonable.
 
Bundled in with our State Farm homeowners policy. I have everything through State Farm. It is about $32.00 / month for $13,000.00 coverage.

Katrina ate one of my boats (sunk in the yard on prestorm dry ground), and years before a lower unit was taken out on another by a submerged sheet of plywood. Both were covered minus the deductable.

The boat eaten by Katrina was considered totaled. I gave it to my Nephew he repowered and sold the boat later for a profit!
 
I have a BoatUS policy for an agreed hull value of $23,000 for $225/year $228 deductible. I was surprised how good the coverage was and how affordable. I used to have progressive, but it was $420/year and they will pay on actual value and not agreed value. In my case that was $14,000 and it will decrease each year with the depreciation of the boat/engine, a lot less than BoatUS.

a.m. best is one of several recognized authorities that rate insurance companies. so whatever carrier you choose should have an a.m. best rating of not less than A+. with A+ or better rating, you shouldn't have any problems with claims being settled.
my opinion would be to select "agreed value" in addition to purchasing the maximum liability coverage offered.
if your personal effects, ie. fishing equipment, trolling motors or whatever is not attached to the boat, exceed $500. you might want to insure those items as an additional endorsement to your policy.

ps: generally a home-owners insurance policy extends limited coverage to personal effects aboard a boat, vehicle, motorhome, so i would check with them and see what's already being extended to you, at no additional cost!
 
We had Progressive when my boat was broken into , twice. both time the agent was out that day and on time. I had the check in hand with in a day both times. great service. When we bought the 27 they wanted to double our pricing. said that our 22's policy was a old pricing that was no longer available. I switched to state farm for half the price.

with your permission, i would like to make a minor correction to your post, it was the claims adjuster that met with you. progressive agents, of which i'm one, don't have claims paying authority.
adjusters adjust and settle claims, agents offer advice, sell and service policies.
the reason i mention this is that someone reading your post may have had a loss and might feel their agent didn't help them, as your's did.
