I Love Honda Outboards

I have 1300 hours on my twin Honda 40 outboards, purchased in 2004. The only repair in all that time was to replace a stuck thermostat. Since I did the Great Loop in 2004/2005, they mostly have been used for waterskiing, with a few 200 mile trips on the Mississippi, St Johns River in Florida, etc. I had an early fall vacation last year, so the boat went into storage in September. All I did was add some stablizing fluid to the gas tanks, which had E10 gasoline in them. Yesterday I took the boat out for the first time, and both engines started immediately, running flawlessly for 50 miles as I did a tour of Lake Winnebago to burn off the old gasoline. I love my Hondas!

I love Honda's to a point of obsession: snowblowers, lawnmowers, cars and now my 115 HP O/B. Their engineers are brilliant and innovative, and their products can last for decades if well taken care of. And when a situation presents itself to sell a used Honda product, it commands a higher resale price than itscompetition.

Yeah, Hondas are great. I've had two Honda cars, both bought used, for the last 20 years. [The '96 Accord black station wagon was stolen 5 days ago so if you see it, let me know.]

I have a 2011 injected 90 hp Suzuki which pushed my boat in Barkley Sound, west Vancouver Island, last summer. I bought a new engine rather than used last year so I could get the fuel injection. I saw a deal on a nice used Honda but in was carburated. Seeing how well injected automotive engines perform convinced me to spend the extra money for the new injected Suzuki, and, it was about $1,000 less than the new Honda, and rated just as highly in some circles.

The engine brand I observed in the Ucluelet marina and elsewhere in BC was mostly Suzuki, also a smattering of Yamaha, but the Honda was rare. Not so in US PNW waters which has a preponderance of Honda engines. How come all the Suzukis up north? [north to me, I'm an Oregonian] and so few Hondas?

Down here in SW Florida one is hard pressed to find a Honda dealer . I find parts always have to be ordered and are more $ . Yamaha seems to be the number 1 here in SW fl. I have had Suzuki , Honda ,Mercury, Force, Johnson and Yamaha motors .

I think as of 2012 most motors are very good it's dealer service and easy to get parts that should matter besides initial cost.

You named the one difficulty with Honda outboards. In Connecticut, Honda service is becoming more scarce. Suzuki makes great outboards, and they seem to be doing better. Mercury is also increasing in our area. I think it may be economics, and these manufacturers may be giving dealers/service providers a bigger profit margin. It's too bad, because what may be bigger profits for dealers may not necessarily be better for their customers.
