This is so cool I just could not resist.....I saw it on the internet yesterday and bought it immediately...it is so me.. just too cool for words...it is a 1974 BMW 760 with a sidecar attached...(for Roxie)...I already have one sidecar but this one is even neater...

It is in Blairsville Georgia.... about 2400 miles from home in California...I plan on flying to Atlanta in about two weeks and riding it home...probably try to stay on Interstate 20 to Texas and then Interstate 10 the remainder....staying in Motels...and covering about 500 miles a day...5 days if I am lucky and no problems....what a great adventure..plus I bet I can get some good Southern Barbeque along the way.

Sue just laughs...wonder why ?? Rox will not go on this trip..although she loves the sidecar we now have...it's just to long a ride.

That sounds really cool Joel!

I have not had a bike for years. I have a friend who has one of the older BMWs and when I had a bike we took a week long trip. Sounds like a great adventure. Post a pic when you can.

Good Luck, and stay safe,
Steve

I will have my computer with me... one of the few things I carry on my motorcycle... and will be staying in motels along the way so I will keep a running log.... Sue insists I carry a cell phone .... I usually carry some simple metric tools and a fresh change of clothes... wearing leathers during the day...and civie's at night.... (travel light...travel fast)

Don't know the exact departure date.... I found airline tickets from LAX to Atlanta for only $114 plus tax....so I won't even bother looking at military travel. I need to license it in California and buy insurance before I go... Guess Georgia residence folks keep their license plates.

I will try to post a picture...

Joel-

You old turkey!!

Older than dirt, but still young at heart!

Congradulations! Wish you the best of luck on your great adventure!

If you go to the internet listing copy the address bar, then list it here, we could all see your new baby!

Joe.

Congratulations--may the weather gods be with you! 20 is a fairly good route (we prefer it to 10, because of the road conditions thru Lousiania).
But we still can have some cold weather in March---

Sounds like a great ride--especially the first part in the mountains!

Doesn’t matter what the weather is. The first ride on your new bike is always a good ride.

Congratulations and good luck Joel.

Congrats on the new rig, Joel. You should have a great ride bringing it home. I have a flawless 1983 GS1100 Suzuki that I plan to mount a sporting sidecar (appropriate to a 1980's motorcycle) on one of these days. Sidecars are great.

Have fun,

Steve

Joel-

Be sure to bring back some of that great FRESH Southern BBQ for the rest of us out here on the West Coast!

Dang Joel, sounds fantastic! I'd for sure join you on the trip home on my bike if I wasn't stuck at my job trying to pay for all these toys. Someday, someday, I'll be free... Have a safe trip. Send pics ASAP.

Steve

Joel... You been hanging out by the welding tanks again aint ya??

Well, keep me posted Brother.. I guess if folks can cross country for a boat, a bike aint that far out of the pic either. How much does that side cart haul?

Now..from Atlanta, if ya want to head over the hills a bit, 75N to Chatanooga, then I-24 to Nashville....can save ya a nights hotel bill, and for sure a promise of some BBQ.

Then,,,you head west on 40,,, or... take 65S down to 20 in Bham.

This would give you known good BBQ, and, a nice home to stay in on your 1st night ride/road-trial. Don't come on 2-7Mar. I will be on the west coast attempting to show Sherryl some whales.

Nah...I think I will wait for the weather to get better......another week ...Ha!
I found an airline ticket for $114 one way to Atlanta.... and the guy with the bike said he would pick me up there.... so I am planning on riding the 14th and it should take about 5 days on da road....if nothing breaks....but you all know how I Love Disaster....

A group of us are going to the Fred Hall Sport Show on Thursday of the week you'll be here... come with us... heck take my boat and go whale watching on yer own... course that may cost ya some pulled pork.. ya got me hooked !!! may have to hit rehab.... actually Joe hit it really close with that picture...Yes I am going to carry an ice chest....I did find a place in Thousand Oaks that has pulled pork by the quart....hot and comes with a fork..
(I tell Sue that I am taking the dog to the dog park in TO.)

Joel -- good on ya! We'll be in Tucson in mid-March -- on the I-10. Stop by and have a meal and a bunk -- all we charge is a few hours of our listening to your tale!! Hope to see you there.

JOEL CALLED THIS MORNING LOVING LIFE ON HIS BIKE IN GA: Raining a bit on him, but he is still shining and loving his bike and side car. They are performing great!! Taking the back roads... and will be spending this weekend at Stephen Foster State Park, around the Fargo, GA area. Had some great BBQ in a joint that looked bad....but the BBQ was great. He is going on an air boat ride back in the swamps later today. He is truly having a blast and wanted me to tell yall HOWDIE :thup :thup :smiled

I will be on the river for a few days...and will give an update either Monday"ish".... or when ever he calls back after then. Keep his safe travels in yer prayers... Old man doing young man roadtrips.

Joel Good Buddy-

As a motorcyle guy I appreciate your tale. I know you cannot see this now but best of succeess on your delivery. I know you can literally fix anything on a BMW on the fly, so you are the perfect guy to be on a road trip by yourself with your metric wrenchs. Hope to see your new rig this summer when we come crusing by again on our Harleys!

Sincerely,

Jim

Joel gave a laughing joyful call/update this morning from the Mobile, AL area...about to head west on I-10 towards Houston...letting weather, fun, and just impulses carrying him west. Great weekend in GA in the swamps playing with the alligators, and turning the 4" prop on the boat rental to a 2" prop... Loving life on the road on his new project....which did take him by the parts house this morning due to loosing some front brake parts....which was the funny noise he heard while tooling down the roads..

Back on the road...heading west...and smiling. Favorable 2 day forcast for him now.

Another update from Joel this morning...still loving life on the road, or on the bike...still just a laughing having a blast. Just about 50 miles east of Houston, heading west at a steady pace... with an occasional tightening of the cluth bolt....which as some point is simply going to need a longer bolt.

But, having a blast and loving life...and so far good travel weather too.

Byrdman...posted updates for Joel and friends.

I was expecting to hear from Joel this afternoon, but didn't.....hope all is well. I'm about 4 hours west of Houston just off I-10 so he should have been by here a couple of hours ago. He missed some great South Texas Bar-B-Q in downtown Cibolo!
Dave

somewhere alongside a Texas highway, there's probably a guy in a Hawian flowery shirt wrenching on a BMW :) hope all is well on Joel's adventure, sure sounds like he's having a good time
