One of my winter projects is to remove all screws that penetrate the hull and pot them. I was wondering about the trim tabs as they have several screws attaching them to the hull. Should these be removed and potted?

We pulled the trim tab screws on the C Dory 25 we re-did. There was both water intrusion and small amounts of rot in the transom in this area. We routed out the area, and filled it with solid glass and epoxy.

Definately the trim tabs should be potted! I don't know why the factory does not put solid glass in this area from the get go!

Good for you!
I have tossed around that idea for windlass, stanchions, etc. but have not moved forward yet.....

I carefully check my Armstrong bracket to make sure everything is as sealed as possible with the 5200 but of course I wish they sealed them properly with undercutting, etc.
 
When we got Journey On, we assumed that it had been put together carefully, and took a sea trial to Catalina, courtesy of a C-Brat get-together.

First we find the rear bilge pump was clogged, so we borrowed a hand pump to pump the water coming in back out. We now have one as standard, though I've cleaned out 99% of the crap the factory left in..

Second we found that the transom drain plug boss was held in by three loose screws and little sealant. Surprise, this was letting the water in. Since the screws were loose, I had to drill the holes out, seal and use bigger screws.

The motto: check every underwater fitting and seal them. By the way, this ain't our first boat.

I also had lots of problems with this boat. Most of it due to Dealer set-up. (Not knowing what the heck they were doing). I still have to get around to re-wiring my batteries.
Kind of dis-heartening to pay the price for these boats then spend hours sealing them up, which should have been done at the factory in the first place.
I never had this problem with my aluminum boats. Wonder how a C-dory made out of aluminum would perform...............[/quote]
