Does anyone know if the hulls are the same for a 1981 C-Dory 22 Classic Angler and a 1985 C-Dory 22 Classic Angler. I am trying to determine if the side gas tanks that Kevin .( Catch 22 ). made would fit in my boat using the same measurements depicted in his drawing ( album ). Thanks Tug

I believe that the hull changed in 87.
they are the same up to that time.

Tug-

The 1980-1986, and therefore including the '81 & '85, CD-22 Classics, sometimes erroneously called "Anglers", are both flat on the bottom with the same side panels and shapes. They're out of the same mold(s). At least that's what I've always heard here on this C-Brat and the several sites that preceded it for the past 12-13 years.

The hull change was with the 1987 C-Dory CD-22's, with the advent of the same shallow V hull which is used to this day. The longer cabin version is referred to a the "Cruiser", while the short cabin version with the longer cockpit is referred to as an "Angler". Thataway Bob refers to this hull as a "semi-dory".

Referring to a CD-22 Classic as an "Angler" is not technically correct, as they were never named that by the manufacturer or referred to that way in the marketing. It's just a practice developed by some owners of Classics to refer to their boats, since they resemble the '87 and later Anglers more than the Cruisers of the same period.

Adding to the confusion is the CD-16 coming in both an Angler and Cruiser model, as well as a similar practice of calling the CD-19 an "Angler", which I don't think it really was by the manufacturer(s), but I could be wrong on the last point.

Hope this is illuminating (& correct!)

I kind of figured that the hulls changed it 87 but i didn't know that the 80-86 hulls used the same mold. Thanks Tug

Not to be a "nit-picker" about the names, but I thought I'd just add some more information for those that care about the nomenclature.

All this is a bit nebulous, but here's my take on it:

The original 22-foot C-Dories (Dorys) were referred to as a "Hunky Dory", but that name was already taken by another manufacturer.

The factory then wanted to refer to them as a "Sea Dory", but another manufacturer was calling their boat the Sea Dory (de ja' vue), so they eventually settled on "C-Dory".

The term "Classic" was not used until much later, after the "Cruiser" and "Angler" were designed, and was then used to refer to the 1980-86 models, which up till then, had been simply referred to as C-Dories (Dorys), except for the "Hunky Dories" (Dorys).

See, it's just so simple, clear as bell, and without any confusing details (and I probably left something out or am wrong somewhere!).

Also, the plural of Dory is Dories, but Dorys is somehow more appealing, at least to me, but what do I know (?)!!!

As a proper noun, the correct form is "C-Dorys" not "C-Dories." You were obviously a science teahcer not an English teacher! QED.

Pat-

Good correction!

Admittedly, I didn't look it up, but thought I was correct for whatever reason.

Thanks!
