How much is this boat worth?

My name is Jerry Dove. I am President and founder of the Tillamook Anglers Corporation. We are a all volunteer non profit Corp. We operate the all volunteer Salmon hatchery in Tillamook Oregon. We have just been donated a 1985 16ft C- Dory with a Johnson 40-50 horse and all electronics. This boat looks brand new. It was used at the most half dozen time and has been stored inside for the past 20 or so years. The motor has been checked out a new thermostat installed and the gas tank drained and cleaned. This has a cabin. The trailer is an e=z loader. Any idea what we should ask? All proceeds go the the volunteer Salmon hatchery. Thank you for any help.

Wow, nice donation. I will not commit on the price as others are better suited for that. If you do a search under boats for sale you will find a few 16 that have sold in the last year.

Are you going to auction off the boat or sell raffle tickets?? you just might do better with raffle tickets. I helped raffle off a drift boat for the CCA last year and we brought in more then the boat sold for new, it was a new boat donated by the builder. If you do sell raffle tickets I will take two..

Jerry, hello from Twin Rocks!

At the bottom of the forums, there is a thread that shows all the boats that have been advertised on CBrats, and their asking prices. You can get a good idea of the boat's value from there.

Hi Jerry - That boat sounds like it may be one of those rare finds that is worth more than its age would suggest. Best of luck in getting the most good you can from it.

In addition to the For Sale forum, we have a forum called Market Place Reference that has seven pages of archived ads for boats our members have sold. Lots of 16s on the list.

Indeed. EVERYTHING depends on condition. The old "willing seller, willing buyer" thing. Some sales here might be misleading, first the condition of any number of the boats that sold for what seems like a low price was less than pristine as you describe, and second, the desire or even compulsion of the seller has led to more than one good deal here. The three Ds (death, divorce, disability, or now perhaps, debt) is a powerful motivator.

Still, it is hard to pick a number out of the hat. Look for comparables and adjust up for the good condition!

Okay, I will commit to a W/A/G and sight unseen say somewhere in the 10K to 12K range. Depends mostly on the power if the boat is in that good of shape. Save a couple of tickets for me too.

Thank you all. The motor is not the best. It is as old as the boat. One cylinder has a little low comp. not bad. I think we will put it up for sale and take best offer. Remember all proceeds go to the volunteer salmon hatchery.
Feel free to let folks know. My phone is, 503-812-1572

We sold a simlar boat with an excellent running Johnson 40 and 6 horse kicker for $9000. Boat had been garage kept since new, and had not been run in at least 10 years.

With a weak engine, value will drop, especially taking into account what a new engine will cost.

My guess, without seeing the boat or hearing it run is $5000-7000.

Jerry, you'll probably get the most by listing it on this site, we know what they are worth and there are a lot of folks looking. It can be listed in the "for sale by owner" forum.

Good luck!

Charlie

I'll throw in here: I tried to sell my 91 16 angler with a 50HP 4-stroke (yes I said 4-stroke) listed here for months at $8500 and no one wanted it. I'm glad it didn't sell now, but this might give you something to go on.

Agreed...those suggesting the much higher prices, are perhaps a tad hopeful.

Sneaks' 16 was sold last year, for $8K - and it was the cleanest older 16 I've seen, short of Catman's. It also had a 2-stroke, but with extremely low hours and ran like a top. The trailer was hard to tell from new.

For me - I'd never own an older 2-stroke, so I immediately add $6-8K to the cost of any 16 that has one. And, when one can find older, well cared for 16's with 4-strokes pretty frequently for $12K - Matt's estimate makes the most sense to me, based on the limited information provided.
