How long will a Honda last?

We were having a discussion about the longevity of outboards. Our Honda 135 has about 850 hrs now. Assuming good maintenance about how many hours are people getting before it's not worth fixing? I know there are C Brats who have done Alot of cruising. Thanks. Alan

It depends on how much you use it. Commercial boats put 3000 to 5000 hours on them. If you are only using it a little each year, cororsion becomes a factor.

Alan also it depends on whether you boat in salt or fresh water .
what kind of maintenance 100 hour intervals or yearly oil changes according to Honda or whatever eng one has also washing out eng each time in saltwater. I've seen outbards go for 20 yrs up in Idaho fresh water 50 hr use a yr .I've also seen 3-4 yr old engines that you could put your finger through because of corrosion These were older engines not the newer ones with much better corrosion protection. I'm hoping to get at least 2000 hours out of my 06 f-115 yamaha that would be over 10 yrs of use for most boaters. In 10 yrs who knows what kind of engines we will be using multi fuel or hybrid outboards . Also you could have your oil analyzed to see what kind of wear it is going through , just like they do with 100 hr inspections with airplanes So relax go boating enjoy by the time you need an engine you will be buying a different boat .

Alan we are going down to the Keys end of April maybe we could hook up Jim

I have 1993 45s that I use just about exclusively in the salt and they still look great with minimal corrosion. They have pretty close to 900 hours on them. I just rinse them off when I get home and run them in a garbage can in fresh water for a few minutes after each trip. It seems to keep them in great shape. It also probably makes a huge difference that the boat has spent the majority of its life in a heated garage and on the trailer far away from the salt. Heck, it still looks like new to most people and they are shocked to find out it is a 16 year old boat.

Longer than you need to worry about, with that assumption, Alan. The Ferios (Halcyon Days, AKA El & Bill) had well over 2,000 hours on their twin Hondas before re-powering and if you've ever followed their adventures you'd know they use Halcyon in saltwater as well as freshwater with many thousands of miles under their belt. Like personal health, preventative maintenance is the key to longevity.

In the back of my mind I thought Halcyon Days had over 2000 on the Hondas.I should have a lot of cruising to go on the 135.
Jim-We can't make the Keys this time. How about the ST Johns river in the fall? Thanks again for having Linda & I over. It made the trip home the next day much easier. If you're ever in our area we owe you a ride on Simplicity. Alan

Last week I was at my Honda Outboard dealer to get oil and filters. I decided to ask about the cost of replacing my BF75 hp with a new fuel injected 90 hp motor. There is nothing wrong with the motor and I am not really able to budget for such a purchase but the owner/salesman didn’t know that. I told him that my motor had just hit 900 hours and that I had heard some great things about the fuel injected 90’s and was looking to price one out.
The response I got was totally unexpected. He laughed and said that those BF75/90 motors were so good that he has several customers, commercial and otherwise, who have several thousands of hours on their motors and they keep going reliably. One owner, he said, has over 7500 hours on his and it is of real interest now to see how long it will go.
He said that he would be glad to take my motor in trade as he knows it will sell quickly but….to quote him….”900 hours is nothing”.
He admittedly talked himself out of a potential sale but I walked out of there feeling really good about my motor and the integrity of the dealership.

I wish my honda would ware out. I want a new fuel injected one. I have close to a thousand hours in three years and will get a lot more I think. dam
