hour meter 300 about actual

I inadvertently left my ignition key on last winter for a couple of weeks, the Honda hour meter jumped from about 200 to 499; noticed it this weekend for the first time.
Didn’t think it would do that, thought the motor had to been running.
So what are my options here? I know there’s a couple of Honda mechanics here perhaps they’ll have an answer; I’d like to reset the meter if possible.
Sure not going to have much luck convincing someone the motor has 300 hours less then indicated on the meter.
Not that I’m going to sell the boat anytime soon, but have considered upgrading the motor to newer fuel injected Honda.
 
Most boat's hour meters are activated by the 12 volt ignition switch. I do prefer the separate meters. In the past when I have had to replace a meter, I ran it up (using timers) to the number of hours on the old meter. If you have a separate meter, this is an option.

Not sure about the built in digital meters...
 
I have the Johnson 90 and got their upgraded digital meter package. The hour meter is part of the tach and fuel meter. Sometime during last summers trip the hour meter reset to zero.

I was very surprised to when I pushed the button to select the hour reading and it was just a few hours. I don't think there would be an option to reset the meter so I think it was a glitch.

maybe if I leave the key in the on position I can get it back to where I estimate it should be. But i don't really trust it now.

Well, I don't think it would help to put the motor in reverse and turn the key on (kidding). I know that car odometers and hour meters on other types of equipment are pretty secure to protect buyers from fraud. If you want the meter to reflect true hours, the only thing I can think of is to install new meter and turn key on with battery charger on maintain until correct hours are displayed. I would suggest talking to dealer to see if it can be re-set first, but would not be surprised if they can not.
 
Just from an informational standpoint, some of the newer motors with fuel injection have hour meters built into the computer programs that control everything, and not only is the time logged, but also the rpm run at, and a lot of other information from the sensors.

All of is information comes out of the motor when a printout is made by a service technician with the appropriate computer and program.

As such, that printout would show the actual number of hours logged running, and "key on, no rpm" time either not recorded, or recorded as zero running time.

Just a note for future researches on the topic.

Joe, you are right. My Suzuki 115's indicate actual running time with the tachometers when turned on. A very handy feature but I have hour meters also that are connected to the ignition.

haven't seen it posted yet, but you could disconnect the hour meter and maintain a log book. when your log book equals your hour meter you could reconnect it and go from there. or, simply document exactly what had happened and let the chips fall where they will.
this next statement is a testament to the honda manufacturing quality. in or around 1991 i purchased a honda self propelled lawnmower. it was expensive for the time, approx. $800.00. i have used this mower every year since that date. i hire out the normal grass cutting but i still need to hit the weeds, thick brush and what not. the bolt that allows the oil to drain has been round over for many years, to the point, i haven't had an oil change in at least 6 years. last week i pulled the mower out of storage, still having last years gas in it, (no fuel saver) pulled the cord three times and it started right up. you cannot kill this lawnmower. i'll easily cut small tree sidlings 3/4" thick, hit rocks, metal, whatever and still it runs.
if my twin 40hp honda's are built as good as my old lawnmower, i'll be "making way" for a long time.

Great minds think alike, I was considering doing just that; Would be easy to maintain a log using moving time from GPS.

You really need to get the oil changed on that lawnmower. :wink
