I finally did it. I figured out how to add an external fuel line to my Honda EU2200 Generator.

It uses the factory internal fuel tank shutoff as a selector valve to the external fuel line. Since this generator has an internal fuel pump, it will pull from the boats main fuel tanks now.

Nice work… very useful mod. I see you have a valve in addition to the quick connect fitting.
Is this for leakage or does the line pull air in and the valve seals it to make the fuel pump draw from the internal tank. My question is: when in external tank mode, does the fuel pump still draw from the internal tank or is that line also sealed with its own valve? Would it otherwise pull air if run dry?
I think we met on your boat at Hontoon when you first got the generator and were showing me the phone app control. Best to Y’all

Hey Dale! I remember Endeavor. Sorry for the loss. Answers to your questions.

The EU2200 has the built in fuel shut off so it lets the generator run on this selection. My plan is to run the generator empty with no fuel in the built in tank. It makes it a little lighter to remove the generator on and off the boat by having an empty tank. Plus the fuel tank will be clean and ready for whenever I need to use it off of the boat.

You could definitely omit the fuel valve to the quick connection. I put it in as part of my testing of this modification. So I kept it Installed. No worries with the fuel pump drawing air from the quick connection it has a really strong spring in it.

Imagine if Honda made this standard in the next model? How awesome would that be?

Hey Guys…
Nice to hear back from y’all. I’m loving the new boat… actually a better fit.
Still trying to port my pics over to the new site… the previous album “ENDEAVOR” shows no content, but all the sub albums are there, but not accessible at first. Will try to get some help. Here’s what I could find…

Would like to do a Fall River Run.

Good to hear that the 2200 has the capability to pull fuel from a fuel tank lower in the boat!--this seems like a huge advantage to me. It gets away from separate fuel tanks or extra containers, and having to rely on "suction" from the tank vent, to get fuel flowing from an external tank, close to the level of the generator (and would not pull from tanks).

It appears as if you are pulling from the fuel filter which is wel above the level of the tank. Can the Honda fuel pump pull the fuel up from the tank, if the line was not primed? Can it pull from a fuel filter which did not have fuel (or primed)?

Dale--to answer your question about the albums. I believe that DaNag will have to tackle that issue when he returns from Europe. He was aware of the issue during Beta Testing. It does appear that the photos in old threads have not been affected (fortunately). However, if you say to look at photo # XX on page 3 of the album, that wil not be the same as in the old site's Album.

Dale, you might open a separate thread if you want company on a fall cruise, or even "start and event" sign up, and be the "group leader"--knowing C brats, it can be like herding cats, because of some or our "loose itiniary's". Even in organized cruises, on occasion we have not always stayed at the designated marine, if it looked sketchy, or we prefered to anchor out, and dinghy to the dock for group activities. Leading a fall group on a river cruise would be a lot of fun. (We would join you if we were able.) We found on the upper Mississippi River that by the end of September many of the upper river marinas were closing their fuel docks, and not getting fuel deliveries until Spring. So you want to check on fuel availability along your planed route. Also if frosts are occuring or predicted, the water may be shut off on the docks. Power seemed otherwise to be available. Later the marinas close down competely. That will probably not be true for those marinas on the "Great Loop Route", until winter.

Folks; I plan to set up my EU2200 as mentioned above before my next long trip. I have a solution to any "priming" problem one might encounter that also solves the problem of draining fuel tanks between storage or to move fuel to another place. Earlier, I set up my tanks with Attwood connectors (hopefully pictured) so I could switch between the regular CD22 tanks and other external tanks to add fuel without having to pour it into the main tanks. On long trips, I carry over 100 gallons of fuel total on my CD22.

This setup has worked well for several years. I recently needed to remove my CD22 from the water with full tanks, and wanted to drain them since some health concerns may keep me out of the water until Spring. Earlier I used gravity drainage when on the trailer, but it is slow (2-3 gallons per hour) and I don't have a 25 gallon external tank to drain into. I used a 12 volt fuel pump (hopefully also pictured) to pump sequentially into several 10 gallon external tanks, and then to pump that fuel my truck and car. I try to always use fresh, Seafoam-treated fuel, particularly if it has Ethanol in it. The pump delivers a constant volume of fuel (1 gallon in 2.5 minutes), so I could time all of the draining, and it was much faster. Attwood connectors to the intake and outflow ends of the fuel pump will allow me to add it or remove it as needed.

A word of caution. The disconnected Attwood connectors ball valve can leak. This only happened one time to me, but is well-documented by others. I now keep extra, plugged male and female connectors to attach to external tanks and lines. There is no indication that anyone has seen a leak when the male and female connectors are coupled, just through the ball valve of a single connector.
