New boat to me been out twice, first time out was not able to get the rpm's above 1100 without it dieing after doing some trouble shooting I notice'd the gas line fitting to the engine was leaking. got home and replaced the fitting and put the ear's on and ran the engine in the drive way and was able to rev up the engine no problems. Went back out on the lake today thinking all would be good, primed the ball till hard raised the chock and after several attemps the engine started put it in gear and got to 1100rpm's and it stalled, started back up got tho 1100 rpm's and feathered the throttle and she took off and ran fine. Hope some one can help me this is an 04 honda 4 stroke.

I have 2004 Honda 90s on the BOM.
I had an intermittant problem with a motor dying above idle and it took a couple of months to figure out that it was gradually getting worse and wasn't going to go away by itself. Turned out to be a faulty CDI module. (Capacitive Discharge Ignition).

At the shop:
Waiting in line during the busy part of the season - 6 weeks.
Trouble shooting - 1 day.
Ordering and shippng the part - 1 week.
Actual repair - about 30 minutes.

The 04 90 has 4 carburetors. I would be checking the jets as noted above--could be the ignition also--so a good going over and tune up is in order. If it runs, it will be OK once fixed. Ethanol gas is bad for these motors--try and find pure gasoline...

Pure-gas.org is how you find pure gas. 5 stations in Calif are listed, But if you live in most Calif towns, you may be out of luck! Clear Gas claims to have stations in Calif. In many states most marinas have pure gas--not so in Calif! Aviation gas is also pure--but you may not want that higher octane of av gas. (

Meet a guy with a 65 vet. He raced it a lot ( street race) . Said he only ran av gas. I asked where do you get that because I know that no air port will pump it into a car. hes said your right. but they will pump it into a plane. local air port would pump it from a truck into your plane. he bought a none running plane at a local airport. 172 ( high wing) , Then he made a hose that went from his drain on the wing tank to the car. cheaper then hi test at the track and he could run it anytime he wanted. What some people will do to get what they want.

Got the manual did the trouble shooting everything checked out ok, replaced the plugs and filters as you suggested I did find sand like particles in the fuel water sep. Treated gas with sea foam and startron. After changing out the fuel water sep. and 1000 pumps on the priming ball which never did get hard I ran the motor for about 30min on the ears. Went out on the lake today to run the treated gas through the carbs and still could not get the priming ball hard but the motor started up ok and after about 10 gal. still having the same problem, this is a new ball. any ideas

Had a 90 hp merc 4 stroke with one carb per cylinder. Similar problems. Later found that the one carb bowel vent hose was common to all carbs. Bugs had built a nest in that tube. Cleaned out the tube, 90 purred like a kitten. Carb vent is needed to allow the juice to be sucked out of the carb bowl without creating vacuum in the bowl.

Just another thought.

I'd bet it's the carbs. Did the boat sit unused for a time? I had similar problem with my Yami 80 and it was solved with carb rebuild. The jets were clogged.

"Eagle57",
From what you have described, the problem is most likely with the "induction" system. Bio-fuel can cause the "high speed" carburetor jets to clog up in a very short period, particularly in warmer climates or conditions. The "passages" (jets) are so small in diameter that clogging can quickly occur. If this does turn out to be the problem, its very important that you get into the habit of draining each of the four carburetor bowels when storing the boat for more than a month! There has been extensive coverage of this "issue" on "C-Brats" which I suggest reading.

OK, lots of really smarter than I am mechanic types already here, and probably all are onto something, and there are lots of different ideas, but the common link. The engine burns GAS and the likelihood of finding decent gas is like 1 to 4,000,000. (If there are only 5 stations in California that sell real gas.) So meet the problem up front. You or someone is going to have to tune up the engine, including cleaning the carbs, especially if it sat unused for a while,

THEN

Start using Marine Stabil additive, YES, with every fill. And to that add Startron gas treatment. That process stabilizes both the fuel (that %!&* ethanol included,) and octane. It isn't rocket science, it is basic economics. Either pay the Stabil fee or the mechanics when (not IF ) the carbs need the rebuild. That is a direct quote from my OB mechanics.

I might add that it has worked for me, when the boat sat for 7 months and then started on the first attempt, warmed up normally and ran through all the ranges without a hitch.

BTW, Thanks Bob for the link to Pure-gas.org . There are some local stations, (CFN card fueling sites -- will check into getting into that.)

Thanks all for your info very much app. I just spoke to the previous owner and told me his first year with the boat he did not treat the gas and had to take it in to have the carbs cleaned and then he started using stable and that he never changed the fuel water sep. filter, that explains why I found granules in the bowel when I changed it. So to the shop it goes. Again I thank you all for the input

So how many hours on the motors when you got the boat. That will give some idea of the use level. Most boats only average 50 - 70 yours of use per year. That is not enough to keep from the carb sediment forming from ethanol. (That is probably the granular stuff you found in the filters). My boat had 80 hours on it and sat 6 - 8 months. 200 hours a year, spaced over year around use is what my mechanics said I would need to be doing to get buy without having to treat the gas every tank refill. Maybe that can help figure where some of the problem is coming from.

Wanted to update everyone and to say thank you again for all the input here I have learned allot on this subject. Problem solved she had 2 pluged carbs I pick her up tomorrow, time to start having fun delta here we come. I also want to say that the previous owner who's name is also Kevin paid for the repair's when he could have very easily told me not his problem, not too many people like that any more. :D :D :D
