Honda 135s on TomCat

We have a friend interested in the 2006 Tomcat for sale in Alameda. It has Honda 135s. Our TC has Honda 150s. He was asking if we thought the 135's had enough power. Gene isn't feeling well now so I said I would shout out to the CBRATs for an answer. This TC will be used for fishing and getting out to the tuna grounds. (Not just cruising around). Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Margaret,

The difference between the 135 and the 150 Honda is the V-Tech valve feature. It adds some extra valve timing for more horsepower above 4000 RPM. That's an area where my 150s hardly ever run. In 99% of the cases, the engines would perform the same. At wide open throttle, it might make 2-3 mph difference.

If I were him, I'd go for it :thup

I agree with Dreamer. There is at least one 255 with 115's. I ran one with 135's--not as fast as the Suzuki 150's--but adequate.
 
Bob, that's my TC. 115 Suzuki's. Plenty of power for me, 35knots or so. Permatrims help.

They were there when I bought the boat. If I'd have had to rig it, it would have been bigger engines but these are enough.

Lady KC just arrived back from Carolina Loop with our 2008 TomCat equipped with two 135 HP Honda's
and reciprocating props.

From dead flat water to running directly into a 2' chop on the Neuse River, these gems pushed the TC effortlessly.
We were running on a plane and my notes show we were doing 18mph at 3400rpm. What a comfortable, effortless ride.

As I mentioned to one of the C-brats.......
I say the 150's are like a chevy 350 with a 4 barrel carb,
while the 135's are like the same 350
but with a 2 barrel carburetor.

Today....I am happy with fuel economy.

Maybe parmatrims should be added to each engine,
but what I would like the most is a fuel flow gauge.

NOTE TO ALL.............
Get a spare set of fuel filters and keep them on board.

I will buy mine this week,
from what I just witnessed and the storys told,
I now believe it is very important to keep a spare set on board.

I've never heard of "reciprocating props". Do you mean counter rotating? Permatrims are a great help with my 115's. Guess mine is the Model A with a downdraft...

Great trip you had, I wore one of your t-shirts yesterday! We need pictures!

Updraft - downdraft.... I may have been thinking about my 59' AH Bug Eyed Sprite? Or maybe I was just plain wrong. (it does happen!) :lol:

At the same speed fuel economy will be pretty much the same with the 135 and 150 Honda--when you get up to top end speed--they the 150 will be using more--but you are going faster. MPG will drop--as it always does above a certain speed. I suspect with the smaller engines that the prop pitch will be different. For example on the Suzuki 150's we run 21.5" props. (The Hondas are geared to run lower pitch props).
