Holy Jumpin' Up and Down CG Cutters!

You guys just think a C-Dory pounds in the chop!

I once had a scholarship offer to swim for the CG. Too far from the west coast for my weenie 18 year old brain. (at the time, not NOW!) Man, maybe I should have gone! I wonder if they'd still take me..... Thats what I call a fun job!

Wow, that's incredible footage. I don't think I've ever seen a boat knocked over like that. What's the right way to handle waves like the ones that tipped over that boat? (Besides stay home!)

Been on one of those newer 47-footers out of the Station Golden Gate in San Francisco. (Before 9/11 prohibited any civilians aboard.)

Built like a tank / submarine with super heavy riveted and welded aluminum plate, weatherproof sealed hatches, strap down seating, etc. They will self-right themselves in 3-4 seconds, if I remember correctly.

Two 420 hp turbocharged diesels. Totally redundant electronics at the flying bridge and again at the lower interior helm. The instrumentation makes the stuff you can get at West Marine look like Cracker-Jack prizes. Fly-by-wire steering and other controls. Helmsman's chair looks more like the space shuttle than the everyday cruiser. Jumps big waves and swells with ease and the mass and power to take on the big rollers.

Awesome boat, all around. Won't see anything like it at the Seattle Boat Show, so the checkbook's safe and you won't need the Admiral along to give it her blessing and work it into the budget for the next 15 years.

Curious Note: Cost millions of $$$, but still has PORTA POTTI !!! But this may have more to do with containment issues during roll-overs than cost issues. Remember the rotating, centrifugal head from the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey"?

Too bad we can't borrow one and put it on a flatbed and see just whose one ton truck with 4wd and diesel burner could pull it uphill over a 6% grade in a snowstorm. Would have great entertainment value and put all the truck guys put it on the line for real!

See you at the SBS/CBC! Joe.

Those boat guys earn their pay, that's for sure. I have a lot of respect for them. I guess you have to love doing it because it must be scarey at times. Hey, when it gets that nasty out there, the only view of a boat that I want is this one! :D

And speaking of big waves, check this one out. I took this pic of an 80 foot fishing boat. That's a big freakin' wave! The skipper was happy to see us in a hover next to him while he transited the area, for sure.

Looking at the videos I would have to say they were jet driven. In the one video where it goes topsy turvey you can see a jet spray from the back of the boat until it rights itself.

Any idea what these boats have for prop protection? What happens if they end up on the beach?
They have no prop protection. It's a planing hull. The two shafts, wheels and rudders are exposed with no protection. If they wind up on the beach, they're gonna have a big bill to replace/repair the running gear.

Sorry but Textron Marine's website sucks, so I can't post a direct link to the MLB 47 brochure. Go here:

http://www.systems.textron.com/

Click on "Marine and Land" in the upper right corner. The click on the MLB picture. Then click on the MLB data sheet link. You'll see pictures of a rollover test that shows the running gear.

These boats are too cool. Was pulling into a cove in one of the Lake Erie islands this past summer and saw one sitting there. I think they were looking over my boat about as much as I was checking out theirs. Had a couple of the Coast Guard guys come over and talk to us about the C-Dory later that day when we returned to the launch site. They were intrigued by the C-Dory. Don't see too many of them on Lake Erie in Ohio.
