Help with upgradeing gps/fishfinder.

Exact same story for me regarding vision changes. I also think when boat movement increases with wave action it will be more comfortable for me to monitor the screen.

The split screen for gps and fishfinder (ff) at 5inches each puts me near/at where I was with former separate units. Though I look forward to a larger screen for either mode as you pointed out, you enjoy seeing the full screen ff when fishing at the back deck. I know I would appreciate this as well.

If you get rid of those boxes at the top of your screen it will be like having a new unit! I'm puzzled that tech. support did not solve this for you though you probably explained this earlier.

I have no experience with radar yet other than an introduction class at West Marine a couple years ago. You mentioned you will be using the 5inch HDS unit for radar. A 5inch GPS used to be OK when my vision was better, and still works. Do you expect monitoring radar images on a 5inch screen will be similar to looking at a 5inch gps? It must be adequate for you since you are planning on it for your radar.

If you are serious about fishing and fish deep water, get a screen with the most vertical pixels possible. Here is an example. Let's say you are in 200 feet of water, are looking for a fish (salmon) that is 6 inches thick and your screen has 400 vertical pixels. That means the salmon will be represented by one pixel on your screen and that is if your bottom reflection is at the bottom of your screen (200 feet / 400 pixels = 6inches per pixel). If your bottom line is mid screen then there is a fraction of a pixel that represents the fish. That can be tough to see.

Personal feeling for radar is that 7" is the mininum. The new HD/BB units have far better descrimination, but you still need screen size to differentiate between targets.

The other thing to consider in FF is newest technology--such as CHIRP or Broad Band, with bottom scans--depending on what type of fishing you want to do.
