Help with upgradeing gps/fishfinder.

Also....there are some good deal right now on the hds 10 at cabellas....for the small price its a lot more screen for the money

So, I Have the hds 10, the lowrance 3G radar and the ray marine autopilot spx-r5. All new this month plus I replaces the cable steering helm...in progress. Heading to the Broughtens in BC in nine days for. 31 day tour.

I suspect that the HDS 10 is a bit less because it has been supplanted by HDS 10 Gen2..which are generally back ordered. Not sure if the Gen 2 is worth the extra $$ or not.

The Gen2 has a side scan sonar accessory and is a little faster but I'm told the deference is not noticeable. I am a fisherman but i'm told by a sponsored fisherman that he never uses the side scan sonar. He says side scan is not useful others of course may like it but he did not.

Pete,

We had a CP1000 like yours and you can remove the boxes, I just can't remember the menu sequence ( It's been two years ).

Boy, if you could only remember the steps I'd be very grateful.

I think Dr. Bob had one too.

Doc, if you know, please share.

I gave up trying a long time ago.

Check your manual (if you have one ) or SH has one online. I wish that I could help you more. The only reason that I remember that they could be deleted or added is that I had the same problem as you.

Jerry

OK Jerry, will do.

The thing that gets me though, I tried everything I could think of to eliminate those data boxes and finally gave up.

And yes, I've studied the manuals.

Then, in 2010, I purchased the firmware upgrades for the plotter and the sonar module.

At that time I was hopeful that these upgrades would do the trick.

But, when I talked to the techs at S.H. they said that their updates were unrelated.

They never said something like, "oh, you simply follow a particular sequence of key-strokes".

In other words, they never dis-abused me of the idea that the data-boxes weren't removable.

I'd really resigned myself to the loss of that screen space.

As I recall, it's about 20% of the vertical pixel count that's wasted on those damnable boxes.

With your assurances I will once again try to make them go away.

Wish me luck.

From page 35 of your manual:

2.20.0 Selecting Data Window layout
Press “MENU”, select GENERAL SETUP from menu, then press “ENTER”, select DATA WINDOW and press “ENTER”, select CHART PAGE and press “ENTER” again. Choose the desired data window layout to be shown with the ShuttlePoint knob and press “ENTER”. Selections are None, 1 Line Small, 1 Line Large, 2 Line Small, Highway, Compass. See previous Figure 2.20.

Select "none".

That should make the data boxes go away on the chart page. For the other pages, just substitute their name for CHART PAGE in the above sequence. Lot us know how that works!

"I feel your pain" not to sound like president Clinton. but the GPS/ Fishfinder manuals seem less than user friendly. Lowrance seems to get off on making the dammed operation more complex than necessary. I wish Apple would build one....I bet they would just work.

Adeline your fish finder looks to have nice definition. Do you like it? Other than the manual?

Chris

I see it as a choice of one plotter/sounder/radar on 8 / 10/ 12 inches, gives about the same real estate as 3 six inch plotters separately used in FF, Chart plotter and Radar. My choice is 3 separate units--but there is much to be said for the larger units. Also if you have FLIR, or AIS, you may want a separate screen area for these points of data, or video display.

I like 5 to 7" units, but 4" works OK--much smaller is a bit difficult to see when at speed in these boats. (I have a Garmin 76 as well as the 541 on the Caracal. The 76 with about a 3/12 screen is back up--large scale, or just "numbers"...

We recently went from 3" to 4" now to 7" for the RV GPS/plotter.With the 7" we can list POI on one side of the screen, and the map on the other.

I would reiterate Bob's preference for multiple units. Having isolated multiple sources of navigation information is always preferable, and could save your life or at least some worry if your primary unit malfunctions.

Thanks for ALL your responses!

I really appreciate having the perspectives for making my choice. I'll take a 2nd look at some things as a result ( separate gps and fishfinder/sonar units as compared to one unit). If I didn't mention it in my original post, my present set up is a 5-5/8inch gps and 5in sonar side by side.

I hope you're having a great trip. Before I had my dory I camped and fished there. I was lucky to get permission to use a temporarily available kyak camp next to White Passage. We were using a 15-1/2 foot Sorrensen at the time. Very good memories.

Please let me know how your hds10inch gen.2 gps is working out. I may not be able to stand this much longer and will have one myself soon. I am surprised more people did not respond to having the 10inch model regardless of generation 1 or 2. I realize lots of factors involved.

I personally think any chart plotter/gps with a screen over 8” diagonal is overkill, I just don’t get it????

Bad eyes

Yep, it's the eyes.

When I got Adeline I was only 30 years old and my vision was perfect.

My fishfinder was a small Lowrance that I mounted on a rotating "Johnny Ray" bracket attached to the bottom of the overhead shelf.

It was aimed at the helm while underway.

When fishing I'd aim it straight back so I could see it from the deck.

At about 45 my eyesight started to fade.

Couldn't make out the Lowrance from the stern anymore.

Needed a bigger display or a second fishfinder out back.

Upgraded to the 10" Standard Horizon.

Sadly, the new unit was TOO big to mount under the shelf...it would completely block the center window.

So, it sits where the old compass sat. Even uses the same mounting holes.

Once again I could spot fish-arches from the deck. :D

One final thought...that 10" display seems real big until you go to split-screen (chart/sonar).

Then you're actually looking at two 5" displays, side by side.

Hi Pete, Charlie is right I have a SH combo unit(5") and I was able to get rid of those boxes for the same reasons you want to.

I was going to buy Raymarine but the parts guy at the dealer where I bought my boat told me the SH had faster redraw (like somebody else said here). I am quite happy with it.

Somebody else mentioned the IBM Thinkpad here. I have 1 and they are very ruggedly built. They were used by the police here - I bought a refurbished one and love it.

Regards, Rob

Thanks for that Rob.

I sure hope you're right.

I read Charlie's post...

He must have a different manual than me.

Page 20 of MY manual is all about wiring and DSC Connections.

On page 59, I find "10.0.5 Customizing the Data Windows".

The passage reads...
"The data fields contained on the General, 1 Line small/large and 2 line small data windows can be changed. The picture below shows the Chart Page with 1 Line Large selected and
a Popup window with many selections.

1. To change a data window field, press and hold [MENU] until the field is highlighted.
2. Move the ShuttlePoint knob to the desired data field and press [ENTER]. The popup
window will be shown.
3. Move the ShuttlePoint knob up or down to choose the desired setting and press
[ENTER] to select and press [CLEAR] to store and exit the editing mode."

In the middle of page 60 it reads

"NOTE
Data window field on the NAVIGATION, HIGHWAY, GPS STATUS, and NMEA pages may be
customized in the above manner.
"

No mention anywhere of customizing the fishfinder display.

I've also got a completely separate manual for my FF520 black-box sonar module.
No help there either.
When I get out to the boat I'll try again but so far the manuals aren't helping.

Adeline I too got my dory at just before 30 kind of for a turning 30 present. hoping I will still have and be happy with her at 45....

that said I went with the hds units from lowrance. I have a hds-8 insight where adeline mounted the SH, I used the compass holes as well. then also have a hds-5 nautic insight that I networked with the 8 to use as a back up gps and additional ff screen. But it will mainly run my radar once I add it this winter. I am happy with this set up. and there are a lot of people against lowrance but I have always used them and been more than happy with them.
