Hell's Nerds

Here's the guy we all think is so smart heading out this morning. At 6:00am. In the rain. I'm just saying...

I was almost late for work. It took him 20 minutes to get all the gear on.

It was nice to have him by for a visit. And I am especially grateful to have been a part of him fulfilling his lifelong dream of riding up Highway 101 on a Bultaco. Or whatever.

Great seeing you, Bill. I hope you made it safely to your northern home, and got there before the rain really started. We'll be right here in the same spot for your return trip.

For those who "feel the call", a bit of weather is just part of the adventure. 8) We've had many cross country motorcycle adventures over 40+ years of riding; experienced snow while crossing the Rockies in the summer, metal melting heat and humidity in Florida, frightening crosswinds in the high plains. Hail hurts. Big city traffic. Endless Arizona deserts. Relishing the luxury of a motel with a hot tub and a pool.

For those who want a "pilothouse" motorcycle for the same kind of protection provided us by our C-Dorys... well, that may be a seriously small niche. You know there are a lot of people out there who don't understand why we choose to go cruising on a small boat.

I understand Bill's "need" to make this pilgrimage on two wheels. Hopefully, Mother Nature will be kind to him along the way.

Enjoy the adventure, Bill... and keep us posted.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

Hey, it's all about your personal best. Snow, desert, heat, cold, up and over the mountains more than once..and all 1200km in 88 hours on a Schwinn (well actually a Waterford built by Richard Schwinn). Our son Joe did it this past weekend.

What? No sign on the back that says "Port Angeles or bust"? I'm deeply disappointed, Bill.

Actually, rumor has it he really wanted to do this trip a bit sooner so he could stand in the 50 yard long line for the first showing of "Twilight" at the Lincoln Theater. :bat :wink

Here's what that dork looked like a little after noon.

Bill-

Looks great!

Home sweet home!

How your butt feel after that ride?

Is that a real road bike or a punishment pony?

Retirement job idea: Stick an air hose up your leg and try out for the Michelin Man commercials!

Good Job!

Joe. :thup

looks like space invaders to me. :cry

Naw. More like a latter day Ghost Buster. I think he got his gear inspiration somewhere on this site. He already looks like Nick Redfern with hair....

Quite an accomplishment, Bill. I take it you'll not be straddling anything for a few days....

Not a Bull Taco, but we did have some of the best Fish Tacos ever in Brookings...

Here's a brief writeup with a few photos, along with an interactive Google map with my Garmin tracks laid down on it.

Return trip next week, unfortunately I don't have time to vary the route much...would have liked to head a bit east coming down the other side of I5, but maybe next time.

Spent another night at the TyBoo Hotel on the way home, where my co-Poobah treated me to a little sturgeon fishing (struck out), beer at the dock in Astoria (ran into Astoria Dave), and corn dogs. Ahhh....this is the life.

I started out yesterday morning at 6AM heading back down the coast, planning on two overnight stops on the way back home. But...about an hour into the ride, I got an urge to see my lovely wife, and punched in the waypoint to the GPS. Hmm...11 hours. Took the next twisty road to the west and I-5, and pushed straight through.

She's worth it, but my butt is sore this morning.

Oh...and I gotta say, all the comments about my Spaceman Spiff Suit really pissed me off. So much so, that I decided a serious makeover and attitude adjustment was necessary. I dug deep, queried the GPS for a suitable landmark, an decided to get all Easy Rider on yer a$$es.

Think twice before you insult the Head Nerd around here again...

Dear hell's nerd, Its not your thumb that you toke up!!! Or maybe you already did and think that thumb is something else

'Twas a pleasure to greet the head nerd of Wild Hogs.

For the unsuspecting: no, Tokeland is not an imaginary town, or some acid-fueled creation of the ilk of Baja Oregon (aka State of Jefferson). It's a real place, though disappearing into the Pacific, at the mouth of Willapa Bay.

The Nerd had the good sense to take the slow route along the WA coastline from Grays Harbor to Willapa Bay.

Keep the faith, Nerd.

Actually Bill, if you watch Top Gear on BBC America, you could pass for the west coast version of the "The Stig" who in real life is Michael Schumacher. That takes you out of Nerd Land.
