I can't resist browsing around in an unfamiliar boat supply store. Even though 99% of the items are the same ones that you see in all the other places, I usually find at least one item that is new to me.

As I browsed through Westside Marine outside of Port Townsend, WA a few weeks ago, I spotted this.

I have a couple of pumps for filling the engine gear case with the smelly messy lube. The threads never match the proprietary Honda threads. Here's an adapter that adapts Honda to the rest of the marine world. Made by Sierra a division of Teleflex. Two part numbers on the packaging;
18-9794 and N3500.
 
I ended up tapering the plastic tip so it fits in the drain hole, as long as pressure is applied not leaks.

The mess comes when attempting to thread in the drain plug while lube oil gushes all over the place. :evil: Even with the top plug in place there always seams to be a gush of oil when attempt to thread in the drain plug.

I bought the biggest screw driver I could find and it still seems inadequate for removing the drain plug, thinking of sacrificing it to the grinding wheel for a custom fit. :smilep

That's what I finally did after years of trying find one that fits. I hate changing gear oil because of the mess it makes. Even though I found Honda threaded ends for the lube tube, getting the plug started without making a mess is impossible for me. There must be a better way.

This was addressed in another thread recently. An Impact Screwdriver is the answer. It is tapped with a hammer and applies the twist along with being forced into the slot. I got mine years ago to take those pesky Honda motorcycles apart.

Try looking in a motorcycle shop for one.

I have one and had to use it last time, just concerned that continual use may bugger up the plug; maybe I’m wrong. Would be more comfortable using the right size slotted screwdriver; vise grip attached.

Thanks Tom, that's the ticket! Seen them thingamajigs but never knew what they’re used for, beats the heck out of a vise grip monster screwdriver for sure.

For us northern C-Dory guys in a couple of months it will be lower unit drain/refill time.
Get all of the correct "dooby-dobbers" that you need now to properly complete the job before it is too late. Otherwise you will be using a screwdriver with a vise grip attached and a threaded hose end for a Johnson stuffed into a Honda hole etc...etc.
I hate having to pickle my boat for winter storage.
 
I've found that the easiest solution (for me at least) is to let Les's group do all my oil and lube changes. I never make a mess this way. :wink:
