Halibut

Dang it Caty...now I wish we would have gone...oh well.

Did have a nice time...Amy and I left the house Saturday night at 5pm, launched at Scappoose and went up the Multnomah channel. Had steaks by 6:45 pm with a salad. Spent the night was back home on Sunday. RELAXING!!!

Flapbreaker...YES...planning to go out of Newport this Saturday depending on weather. This would be my third launch across a bar for ocean going and comfortable with the area. Would like to try Garibaldi but honestly more nervous about that bar there. I hear and have seen more of a breaking wave situation there and have read in the newspaper you head out and then go SW not following the markers. Hmm? Plus I don't know where to fish out of there...hint hint. Would be anxious to hear your report of going out that bar?

They still have my truck in the shop...put it back together and decided they didn't like the way it shifted, so ordered a shift solenoid -- maybe with a bit of luck I'll get it back tomorrow -- I'm just glad they're puttin the effort into it to get it right! Someone at work (Corvallis) asked me why I took it all the way to Newberg -- because my son used to work there and they give me a price break -- well worth the trip.

Anyhow, when I walked in the door from work tonight, I looked at Steve and said 3 words -- "fishing this weekend!" but it seems his employer may be rejecting that plan, as he's been alerted Saturday may turn into a mandatory work day....argh!

So we won't know until Friday if we can go to Newport Saturday. I'm gathering up gear in preparation for halibut and salmon fishing tho....gotta keep a positive thought! :xlol

Hey John, The Garibaldi bar isn't too bad. I usually try and cross on an incoming tide. It's not too forgiving on the outgoing but obviously it depends on how large the tides are that day. I don't have any secret spots I just go to what they call halibut hill. It's about 22 miles straight out from the jetties and about 750 feet of water. There really isn't any consistant nearshore fishery that I know of.

Flapbreaker...thanks for the information on the area. Sure is deep...I thought it was bad enough at 500 feet when fishing the chicken ranch out of Newport. Bet your arms are ready to fall off.

Heading over to Newport tomorrow for some halibut fishing on Friday and Saturday. Hope the weather forecast holds up.

Flapbreaker nice fish, 720 feet is about 150 feet deeper that what I fish at the ranch. Bait checks are so much fun.....

Caty good to hear the truck is on the mend hope you and Steve can get over and enjoy what looks to be some nice ocean conditions. Be interested to hear on the salmon success.

John nice job on the halibut you got there, been tempted to try some near shore fishing but have so much time invested in fishing the ranch that I hate to change things up.

Shearewater is on dock E5 and I will have the RV parked in spot 25 at southbeach (right by the store) stop by and say hello.

Alrighty you lucky Brats going over to fish for halibut...just got a report from a Newport Readymix driver that the parking lot is full at South Beach (he asked me what they're fishing for) -- and the ocean looks like glass. I'm :cry over my dead truck!

Thanks for the parking lot report caty. I'm hoping the Garibaldi lot isn't full. Heading over tonight after work. I think the combination of halibut, coho, and the Tuna fever has the soutbeach lot full. We'll see. Sorry about your truck. It's tough to watch the internet reports when you can't go.
 
OK, to entertain my fishing lust, I just popped over to the Bonneville Dam cam -- and what to my surprise -- there's a legendary June HOG!! I've never seen one before -- it was like a stretch limo -- covered all the measuring lines and more!
 
Just finished cleaning the boat from today's trip. We got our 3 halibut. Nothing special but I can't complain. We did manage 3 coho as well. Lost three as well. Oh, and we did catch a blue shark while halibut fishing. We just cut the hook off because we were sissy's and didn't want to get bit. :wink:
 
Excellent! Sounds like a great day. I spent the morning working on the boat (turning rod holders around the right way and moving them back so the downriggers will fit on both sides) and organized fishing gear...now I have it all ready to go ....

you mean you don't just grab them buggers like a bass, pick em up and kiss them? cool shark pics, the kid hook into one of those a few years back and it flat wore him out.

We caught six hallibut today, no monsters yet
 
We had a pretty productive weekend. Fished for halibut on Friday one drift and we hooked a double boated a 65 and a 45 pounder. So 30 minutes to limit the boat after a 2.5 hour ride to the chicken ranch. Headed West, hit 59 degree water at about 50 miles out and started tuna fishing. Caught the first tuna about 20 minutes later ended up with 7 for the day and 64 miles out. Long ride home but the ocean was pretty nice.

Skipped halibut on Saturday and trolled for tuna. Hit 59 degree water about 25 miles out so we started trolling. Caught the first one 20 minutes later and ended the day with 6 fish.

What a kick, first tuna on the boat and yes they are a blast on the end of a pole. Biggest was a 30 pounder most averaged about 20 pounds.

Had Albacore for dinner last night, amazing flavor raw. Difficult to discribe the taste but it was fantastic.

Work with some guys that went out of Depot Bay saturday. They limited on halibut out about 20 miles, then noticed a trawler going by with two handlines, one of them going wild. They got into tuna big time. Didn't have coolers or ice so only kept a dozen.
 
Good job steve. Those are nice halibut and the Tuna are a bonus. I just can't bring myself to drive that far for a fish though. I guess the disease hasn't set in yet. I do plan on going for Tuna this year, just not going to drive 50 miles for them. They were getting them at about 20 miles out of garibaldi as well but this was later in the day on Saturday. It surprised me because the day before they were going 50 miles. Oh, well we fished for the other silver species.

How much ice did you take with you? What system do you use for the slush/bleed bucket? Space is a reel issue on the c-dory when chasing Tuna. Just curious if you have a system down that works well.
 
I finally got the monkey off my back...

After taking my boat on three trips from Edmonds to the Strait for halibut and skunked each time, I wised up and went with an experienced buddy to La Push on Saturday. 30 miles offshore and fishing in 500' of water with 3 lb weights I got a 40 pounder. Not much to bragg about for a lot of you guys but this was my first so I'm feeling pretty good

The flat fish have eluded me so far, but they won't for the entire season, I promise you :twisted: .

Stevej, it was awsome to see you at the beach this last week. Now that you have gone to the dark side there is no return. You have partaken of the sacred flesh and heard the Tuna song as it was beat into your deck and your skull forever. In the winter dulldrums that beating sound will haunt you... there is no cure, only the next Tuna trip will take the edge off.

Flapbreaker... you have the signs and it is only a matter of time.
Buy yourself a big soft cooler now, you are going to need it.
 
I'm a serious salmon fisherman and am now considering reboating to a C-Dory 22 Cruiser now that I've read these wonderful posts about their worthiness in the Pacific Northwest halibut grounds. I fish off of the Washington coast from Ilwaco, Neah Bay to Canadian Swiftsure and north from Port Angeles to B.C. . We went for Tuna August 3rd, 2007 and got 28 for four rods. We then went in for halibut and got skunked, went in to the mouth of the Columbia and caught 16 salmon to end up with the 8 that made our limit. A very nice day. I'd post pics but am not sure how.
