Halibut

Are there any 'buts lurking in the depths around the south end of Whidbey Island? I'm planning to be up there the weekend of April 29-30 and would like to give it a try. I'll be launching from Mukilteo. The fellas that I'm going with have never fished for halibut either, so it's a classic case of the blind leading the blind. Some of the previous posts in this thread have given plenty of info about gear, depth, technique, etc. Is it generally the same in the Sound vs. offshore?

sunday the ninth a lot of folks from puget sound anglers will be headed over to the port townsand area to fish the opener of hali season. I will be motoringover on saturday night after work and looking for a place to stay or drop the hook. any Ideas as to were to anchor in that area??

I may or may not depending on a friend that may or may not work. Hell I may or may not work saturday and may or may not take the kid. Sorry but I can make any commitments this time of year.

I totally understand. My 55 hour weeks have been a blessing as the 70 hours weeks sucked! If you find out you have a spare seat give me a call. :)

Gary,

I may have a spare seat but won't know until Thurs aft or evening. I'll give you a call then if I do.

Just a heads up. Four nice halibut weighed in at Cornet bay this past weekend - all 45-55 pounds. Eastern and Hein, but you know how fisherman tell true.

Dusty

Was one of them yours Dusty? I went out with Roger on Sunday to Eastbank and we didn't see a C-Dory or C-Ranger out there... Only saw one fish caught too. Pretty slow if you ask me!

Hi ,
Went out of Port Angeles monday fished the rock pile and the red bouy no fish no bites. When I came in the checker lady said had checked 19 so far that day .

This Butt was caught on Sunday morning in Mutiny Bay. My buddies were in a 14ft Lund. Had to harpoon him and then hog tie him. They never brought him into the boat and got pretty beat up anyway. They weighed it at 60lbs. Looks bigger than 60lbs to me.

I fished all day saturday from foul weather bluff to just west of dallas bank and back. I did not even get one bite. I did see a few c-dorys. I fished near sark and john in sarks new boat near foul weather bluff. I also had a 22 angler with a funny horn pass by me near port townsend. I do know that of 60 boats checked at everret sunday 10 had halibut and 5 of those came from munity bay. A friend from the P.S.A. caught one near partridge bank. on monday he and another guy went back to partridge and nailed two more 35 and 55lbs. Also john of johns sporting goods in everret got two in his boat also near partridge bank. 38 and 50 lbs. He had a 5x10 in his store already. I will be back at it on sunday with my father in law. If he gets a fish I will be a number one son in law.

Planning on going out on the 11th and 12th weather permiting. Unfortunately I have to be back in town the evening of the 12th. Maybe If I'm lucky and actually catch something I can give you a report and some gps numbers.

The barn doors are impressive as long as they leave a few down there since they are the egg layers and the fishery's health depends on them.

Yes I agree with catch and release, mine was 118# and my first big fish so that one got filllet and released, however we got a 200# a 250# later in the year and they are swimmin free
