The good news for Puget Sound and Strait of Juan de Fuca east of Sekiu (Areas 5 to 10) was that anglers caught 45,856 pounds last year under a quota of 58,155.

"The Puget Sound fishery (last year) wasn't as successful as 2008, 2009 and 2010 which were phenomenal, and as a result we exceeded the quotas in each of those years," Reed said. "Last season they didn't catch all of the quota, so we were able to add a couple of extra days this season."

The eastern Strait and Puget Sound (Areas 6 to 10) will be open for halibut May 3 to June 2. Fishing will be open Thursdays to Saturdays only, except for Memorial Day when it will be open Thursday to Monday.

I've been looking for the opener announcement on DFW website but haven't seen anything. Where did this come from? Man, I can't wait.

May try it again if I can work it into the schedule @ work.

I was just looking for this announcement on the wdfw web site and can find it either but its the season. I got it from Ron Gardner who is the head of the PSA and on the committee that sets the seasons. He is the most hard core hali fisherman I or you have every meet and always limits on big fish.

Tom - what has been your success rate on hali in the eastern portion of the strait? I've only tried once or twice with no luck (but it wasn't like the wind/current was cooperating either).

My success rate sucks :cry . Mostly because I don't get to go when I want to go and that has been a on going problem. despite my well laid plans every year stuff comes up that cause's me to miss days or times. Add to that that Susan hates halibut fishing and starts to complain every time I try to squeeze in two hours of fishing really kills it. This year if I can afford to go I will go with others or with out Susan. Problem is that despite her endless whining while halibut fishing I still like spending my limited amount of free time with her over any of you guys. Nothing personal against any of you but that's the way it is.

If you can go to one of Ron Gardner's classes on halibut fishing at the Edmond's psa, no idea if he is doing on this year, you will learn a lot. Terry Ridick(?) local guide does a great class to. google him and you will find a few article's he has written.

Roger if you are planning to go give me a call.

Hey Tom,

Stay in touch on this one, we have been wanting to have a go at them just about every year but, like you, something else always got in between.
Given 1/2 a chance we will be out there.

last season area 2C had a one fish, 37" max size limit for charter guests....poo, not very exciting. This year it will be again one fish but it can be either under 45" or over 68", yahoo, it got depressing to have to cut loose 150# fish last year

Hey guys, I don't know anything about Hali fishing or the areas, but in the April "Boating" mag on p-80 there is a one pager called "Maxing Out Alaska" and some tips from 2 guides from Elfin Cove, Tanaku Lodge. Joe Calandra and Mike Cash. Either of these guys hold a candle to our own B~C Ken? Ken, are the tips worth anything or are they just page fillers?

Couldn't find a C-Dory anything in the photo, but there is a fish tail there

hey Harvey, I can't find the artical but I think those guys on average smoke me on the big halibut. They spend the bulk of their days hunting the big ones wheras I'm usually thinking salmon first. I know jigging Joe is not a happy camper if he has to spend the day salmon fishing...they're both top notch.....as is everybody in The Cove :)

Ken, Right now I think I'd prefer the salmon, but then on most days, I'm pretty OK if I am in the boat. And I like fish and chips in both versions.

I'd like to go to that class, one can never stop learning, it's in the wrong place and the wrong time for me though.

salmon, salmon, salmon, Hali fishing is fun but It's more like hunting. I like lots of action (although there is no shotage of action when you have three or four big halibut on at a time). The funnest fishing (and one of the best eating) are the black rock fish. When you get into them in the top water it's just plum crazy fun

2012 halibut seasons provide
extra fishing days on Puget Sound OLYMPIA - Sportfishing seasons for halibut will be four days longer in Puget Sound, and more fish will be available for harvest early in the season off the state’s southern coast under catch quotas for 2012 adopted by the International Pacific Halibut Commission. Although the state’s recreational catch quota is down slightly from last year, Puget Sound anglers will get an extra day to catch the big flatfish during the Memorial Day weekend and three additional days during the course of the season. That is a welcome change after three successive years of cutbacks in fishing time designed to prevent that fishery from exceeding its catch quota, said Heather Reed, coastal policy coordinator for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW). "We’ve worked very hard to stabilize the Puget Sound fishery in recent years, and we finally achieved that goal," Reed said. "Last year’s catch actually fell short of the quota by more than 11,600 pounds, which makes us confident we can restore some of that lost fishing time." This year’s catch quota for Puget Sound is 57,393 pounds, with an additional 156,717 pounds distributed among three coastal fisheries. Another change this year is that 80 percent of the quota for recreational halibut fishery in Marine Area 1 off the Columbia River will be allocated to the early season that begins May 3. In past years only 70 percent was dedicated to the early season, with 30 percent reserved for the late season in August. "This change will make more of the quota available during the early season, when that area attracts the highest number of anglers," Reed said. In all marine areas open to fishing, there is a one-fish daily catch limit and no minimum size restriction. Anglers may possess a maximum of two fish in any form, and must record their catch on a WDFW catch record card. 2012 Puget Sound halibut seasons Marine Area 5: From May 24-28, the fishery will be open Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday for Memorial Day weekend. From May 31 through June 23, the fishery will be open Thursday, Friday and Saturday. WDFW has also set Thursday, May 23 as the opening day of the 2013 season. Marine Areas 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10: From May 3-19, the fishery will be open Thursday, Friday and Saturday. From May 24-28, the fishery will be open each day (Thursday through Monday) for Memorial Day weekend. From May 31-June 2, the fishery will be open Thursday, Friday and Saturday. WDFW has also set Thursday, May 2 as the opening day of the 2013 season. Marine Areas 11, 12, 13: These areas will remain closed to halibut fishing this year to protect threatened and endangered rockfish species. 2012 Pacific Coast halibut seasons Marine Area 1 (Columbia River): Opens May 3, three days per week (Thursday-Saturday) until 80 percent of the quota is achieved, or until July 14, whichever is earlier. The fishery will reopen Aug. 3 and continue three days per week (Friday-Sunday), until the remaining quota is taken, or until Sept. 30, whichever occurs first. The early quota is 9,516 pounds; the late quota is 2,379 pounds. Marine Area 2 (Westport): Opens May 6, two days per week (Sunday and Tuesday) for three consecutive weeks. The area-wide fishery will be closed May 27 and 29. If sufficient quota remains, the fishery will open the following Sunday and/or Tuesday and continue until the quota is reached, or until Sept. 30, whichever occurs first. The northern nearshore area will open May 6 and continue seven days per week until the nearshore quota is reached, or until Sept. 30, whichever occurs first. The quota for the area-wide fishery is 40,739 pounds; the quota for the northern nearshore fishery is 2,000 pounds. Marine Areas 3 and 4 (La Push and Neah Bay): Opens May 10, two days per week (Thursdays and Saturdays) through May 19. If enough harvestable fish remain to be catch the fishery will re-open May 31 and/or June 2 and possibly on additional days (Thursdays and Saturdays) until the quota is reached or Sept. 28, whichever occurs first. The combined quota for both areas is 108,030 pounds. In Marine Areas 1-4, the seasons will continue until the subarea quotas are reached.

This is the part from above that effects most of us in the sound.

So Tom. When are you going to take me out halibut fishing on that big boat of yours? :wink

I am planning a weekend on the water for the halibut but details are still in the works. I will spend a few days out with friends and leave susan at home to I can fish 20 hour days. I will post days later and open seats. I'm thinking of fishing out of port townsand or some place up north.
