C-Dorys were just on a PBS TV show, out of Rochester, NY, titled, 'Fifteen Miles on the Erie Canal.' El and I were interviewed for the show while on the dock along the canal last fall (those of you on the Erie Canal Gathering remember that experience).

We just heard from a viewer who watched the show, checked out C-Dory on the website, and contacted us via our Halcyon Days website. He wrote, "I don't know what your secret is to be such good friends but congratulations. I think it's great that two people can be so close and really enjoy each other. (And in a 22 foot boat, I am sure you are real close.)"

So thought you C-Dory friends should know that after 47 years El and I just got (re)married. In a small village set in the northern Sahara, just south of the High Atlas, a Muslim Imam married us. We were in traditional garb (El looked great under multi-colored veils and bright djebella and I in a white robe with white turban) -- so now we're legal in Islamic countries. Perhaps now we'll remain compatible for another 47 years living together on our 22-foot boat :love

47 years of togetherness, Sally and I are at 41 and working on more. Sounds like a great adventure you had, are there any boats in the Sahara? :hot :hot Probably not!

Glad you're back safe and sound, the world isn't as safe as it once was, if it ever was. I was always glad to get back the US after one of my many trips.

Once again, congratulations. We'll look for the PBS story, fortunately they run them many times, usually!! :wink

Any pictures of the ceremony?? Some might pay good money to see you in a turban!! :shock:

Great news, El 'n' Bill -

You did it again - and in my old stomping grounds. Many moons ago had the pleasure of roaming the Atlas range and living in what was then French Morocco for a year or so. Doubt it has changed, or ever will. Beautiful country. And remember which hand to eat with :lol:

Congrats on the first 47 It was wonderful to hear of your travels. Sailing on the desert is hard to top. You are a wonderful couple and we enjoy all your storys. God Bless You.

Hi El & Bill--- I can't believe that they finally got around to putting the c-dory article in the news! What has it been 6-7 months? By the way Barbara wants to know where El got the beads. Rich

those are some pretty neat beads, eh? Borrowed from the Imam's wife for the wedding occasion. Wouldn't want to wear them on the boat though -- if I fell overboard it would be straight to the bottom.

This describes our fall almost 1,000 mile cruise on Le Gran Circuit Nautique, one of the finest boat cruises of it's type one can make anywhere on Earth. If you have ever thought of cruising the canals of Europe, read this link and you may want to put off the European cruise for awhile and do this one first. Here they (mostly) speak English.
 
El & Bill--- Great job, your info will help me this fall on the Rideau canal, what is next? The canals of France? Barbara and I had rented a 42 ft. canal barge a few years ago in central France and did see some rentals that were sort of a cross between a C-Dory and a Fisher motor sailor, they were called Penichettes, made out of fiberglas. Just a thought. Rich

Tempting -- French wines, bike rides on the tow paths, good chow -- maybe we should consider a 'crew' of several couples per boat, and as many boats as folks interested. Hmmmm -- anyone interested in a Brat cruise on the Canal du Midi?? Might have to start a thread on the subject, if so ...
 
What a great idea, Bill. I've dreamed of doing the French Canals but haven't worked up the gumption to do it, yet. Now, if a bunch of C-Brats were to go do it together, I'd be the first to sign up. We already know how much fun it is to meander down a canal together taking in the local culture, cuisine and wine. Doing it in France would be special. Yup, if there is more interest, I'll start a separate thread.

Just received a call from Bill and El. They are out of the water, in Salt Lake, poised to head north towards Washington state. Their traveling with George and Penny on Wanderer... and they are wandering towards making the gathering at Lopez as long as weather, equipment...and life go well.

Hi All- when we were there a few years ago the Penichettes(made out of fiberglass) were based out of Joigny (south of Paris) they actually have three different styles, price at the time was $750-$900 U.S. per week. We went to Vermenton, further south and chartered from an English company called France Afloat. We rented a steel canal barge for roughly the same price and did the Canal du Nivernais, this is a great canal with lots of country villages, plenty of interesting stops and friendly people. Auxerre(an ancient walled city that we wound up spending a week in) between Joigny and Vermenton also has boats for hire. Chalon-sur-Saone near the Canal du Centre is a yachting center and also has canal barges for hire thru a firm called H-2-O. For something different a company on the Canal du Midi rents out English Canal Narrow Boats approx 40' X 6.5'. For Rick and Carol from Maine and others--every Sunday in Provence there is a Brocante (antique/junk sale) that really has some great buys, and covers the whole town, and yes they do ship. We're up for a France Canal trip in spring or fall of 2007. Should we start a new thread?
