If you are inclined to donate something during this terrible situation, just wanted to make folks aware...

Right now, Discover (credit card) will match your donation to the Red Cross if you use funds from your "cash back bonus". We all know a portion of any Red Cross donation goes towards administration, but they do have the experience and expertise in these major crisis situations.

Not a solicitation, just a heads up.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

I sent my $50 in yesterday. Used KOMO news People Helper's Haitian Fund.

Thanks Jim for the heads up. Such a mess. Would love to help, but much more practical to help the folks who know what they are doing and money ships easier than anything.

And prayers for the locals and the rescue teams.

We donated $100 yesterday to "food for the poor" they have been in Haiti for years and have staff and inter structure on the ground. They know the locals and the system there. They only use 1.5% of donations for fund raising and administrative cost, much lower than most.

I cannot give to Red Cross, even though they are a good outfit, for fear of my grandfather smacking me. In WWII they would not help him go home to attend his father’s funeral even though his command was ok with it and the war was over. He was in Japan by then. I know a long time ago and a small thing but he has not forgiven then yet.

I know Citi (and I think American Express) allow cardholders to donate points to various charities, including the Red Cross.

Sent ours in via World Vision (Federal Way, WA). We already sponsor a child in Africa yr round so it was easy, their overhead/admin costs are VERY low and I'm confident it will go to those in need the most and not be funnelled to some less than honest "entity".

Keep them in your thoughts...

I think the texting HAITI to 90999 is just the slickest idea. It's like there's no reason not to do it. A few others feel the same because they were over $8 Million early today. Simple quick and $10 on the phone bill goes right to Red Cross. I'm going to have the girls do it too. A helping gesture and a positive lesson.

I agree with your grandfather. After the personal experiences with Red Cross and the scandal here in San Diego (They collected donations marked specifically for the fires we were hit with but spent it elsewhere on less important "stuff") I'd rather start a fire with $$ kindling than give to the ARC. Our donation is on its way via an alternative route.
