Gulf Islands Advice

Our family has done most of our cruising in the San Juan's, but we would like to start exploring the Gulf Islands. In particular, we enjoy places like Cypress and Sucia Islands where we can set up a primitive camp on the beach and hike, go crabbing and tide pooling, etc... Does anyone have any suggestions for Cypress/Sucia-like Islands on the Canadian side of the archipelago? Thanks.
 
I agree. Conovor Cove on Wallace Island is #1. There is a small parks dock for 8 or 9 boats. If that is full, you can anchor to the left or right of the dock (as you approach) using a stern tie.

Not quit the Gulf Islands, but going around the Sannich Peninsula and down into Todd Inlet, and visit Buchart Gardens from their dock. Anglers Anchorage is a nice little marina just past the Brentwood ferry dock. Plenty of place to anchor down in the inlet and there is a dingy dock to go up to the Gardens from. There are fireworks at Buchart Gardens on Sat nights.

A tall order. "Primitive" camps for large groups in the Gulf Islands with the degree of protection afforded by the harbor at Sucia are scarce. Conover Cove is likely going to be too crowded for your needs. And campers/site regulations or restrictions on campfires may quash other locations.

I'd consider Beaumont on South Pender to be your best choice. But no fires allowed. And for good reason. A restriction widespread in the Gulf Islands.

By "primitive" I merely mean a camping area that is primarily for tent camping and not for RVs. I'm not looking to hunt wild meat, cook over an open fire and howl at the moon. We are a family of 4, with a very old '22 classic. It doesn't have a bathroom, sink, stove, shower, heater, or shore power. It can only sleep two with comfort. So it's much more comfortable and fun for us to cruise up to an island, unload all of our camping gear and toys on the beach, and camp on an island.
 
My apologies, John. Pretty much all the Gulf Islands have suitable campsites, with pit toilets. One nice site is on Prevost Island, with a decent beach, and a good anchorage. It is a short distance away from Ganges Harbour on Saltspring Island for resupply and an ice cream cone if you need one. The island has great walking trails and superb views. The several campsites are shared with other boaters and kayakers.

Conover Cove, on Walker, would also be good, although it is very popular and getting a campsite might be chancy.

I do not remember campsites at Conover Cove, Wallace Island. Campers seemed to pitch their tents with any bit of level grass of their choosing.
