GPS Size

I am considering the purchase of either a Garmin GPSMAP 4208 (8.4" screen) or a GPSMAP 4210 (10" screen) on my C-DORY 25. No comments about older folks needing bigger screens to see.

I don't have the overall sizes of these units so don't know if they will fit on C-SONG or not. Does anyone have either of these units currently in use on their C-Dory 25? If so what has your experience been?

I plan on contacting Garmin to get the overall dimensions so that suggestion is not necessary, but any others you think of will be welcomed. I am always amazed at the wealth of knowledge gained from other C-DORY owners and hope you can help me out.

Hi Gary, good to see you on the water yesterday! Should have had you stop by on the way back to give me a safety inspection.

I've got a Raymarine E-80 on Captain's Cat, plenty of room, best of you don't put it right in front of the helm. It's best (with the 8" screen) to just to the left, in front of the window post. I've got a smaller Garmin 545S directly in front of the helm which doesn't block the window at all.

Stop by some time and you can look at them both, or meet me out on the water some afternoon and I'll demo both of them for you.

Gary, Charlie,

I think the 25 Cruiser's helm shape is more conducive to a straight ahead view of the Multi Function Display. See Jim's Wild Blue as an example.

It looks like a 10" display would go fine in that location, especially if the bracket would allow the bottom edge of the unit to sit closer to the shelf.

hello Gary,

I've got one of the Garmin 8.4" screens in my boat and it works fine size-wise. I think a 10 would work fine also. If you want to keep a lower profile and believe in redundancy, they put two 8.4" side by side. Yeah...that's the ticket

I'm sure the screen up top does not affect visibility very much, but I prefer to keep the windshield totally clear except for a compass. I would personally prefer to keep the display to the left and level with the helm.

Guys,

Sorry my post with Photo of Wild Blue's helm wasn't clear. My point was that the 25 Cruiser and the TomCat have different helm profiles. I totally agree with Charlie and Matt about the display being off to the Port in front of the pillar. That, however, doesn't work on the 25.

Here's the TomCat helm with an E-80.

Gary,
There are several views the helm of Sea Angel that may help. I would
caution you about having any display that can't take direct water spray
and move it away from the center window area. I made a big $$$
mistake and moved the equipment away from the center. On the CD25
you will have spray thru the open center window where you don't want
it.

You may also want to consider your 'plan ahead' toy area at the helm for
the autopilot?, portlable GPS?, searchlite controller?, - to name few.

Something to think about is the 5208 is smaller than the 4208 even though it has the same size screen. The touch screen eliminates the room the buttons take up of course it's a lot more $.
