Generic Posting on this Forum!

Look, I understand I’m a Newbie here, and shouldn’t make waves, but I feel I have to speak up about a problem I have with the Moderators deleting posts. I’m not a spammer – and I’m selling anything, I’m only here to learn, make friends, and contribute to the Forum.

I came up with an idea to use a two way transceiver motorcycle alarm system on my boat and wanted to share the idea with not only the Ranger uses, but our Sea Dory uses as well. So, I posted the procedure up on the main Forum as well.

For some reason, my post on the “Scorpio Alarm System” on the General Chat Forum was just flatly “Deleted” without an explanation, warning or anything. After PM’ing the moderator to find out why, I then re-worded the post to be less specific (Generic) to other boat owners - only to have it shut down as well. The “Moderators” reason to delete my post was because; there were two similar posts on two different forums.

This procedure is not correct and contrary to perhaps 90% of general forum practice on the web. While I’m sure most of the “Local Guys” might visit “all the forums” and see both the posts, (so what if they do!) new people visiting the forum will not! I have been reading the Ranger Forum since 07, and maybe, just maybe, I’ve been on the General Chat forum only 2-3 times since almost all the info is specific on Sea Dory’s and not Rangers. Even a search today on the main Forum only comes up with 4 posts with specific tiles of Ranger on the subject.

Deleting of information is especially bad practice when even this Main Forum only averages 3-6 new posts per day, and desperately needs new material. It’s your forum to do exactly what you want, however, deleting “Generic” threads pertaining to equipment that may be shared with different boat owners is a poor practice for both users and the industry as well.

That's my 2 cents - I'm sure this will end up on the "Delete" pile as well!

Idle on, I'm the one that called the "duplicate post". I didn't delete it though. Can't speak for others but I read nearly all the posts (maybe I've got too much time on my hands, although I work full time, I do it from home and have several computers going at once  ).

The way I use the forum is to look at the menu of all the posts that have been made since I last looked, using the button at the top. I then read nearly all of them, and certainly the ones of interest (which is usually all of them). The one exception is when I'm out for a few days on a business trip and there are a gazillion of them to read, then I've really got to pick and choose...

I think your two posts, with all the pictures, probably took up a lot of the space on the server, not sure how much they have to work with.

Your pictures and projects are great BTW. :thup

A few things - first I agree with the moderators that it makes no sense to have the same thing double posted. I read most all of the forums to extract anything I might find useful to me - e.g. I read the Ranger tug even though I have a CD 22.

Second - the "moderators" are for the most part, not just moderators. Mike and Bill own the site and I'm just grateful that they let me and others play here. IMHO, they have been extremely gracious to all in how they run the site. However, the bottom line is that they have every right to do what they wish. No one ever claimed that this site was under group control so why complain to the group?

Third -a public complaint such as this really does very little to ingratiate you to Bill, Mike or the 100's of other users of this site who are just happy to be able to communicate with each other.

Fourth - lighten up. Don't worry, be happy. It's better for your blood pressure and the blood pressure of those around you.

Just my two cents worth.

Why does the General forum "desperately" need material? Of course you cannot expect a favorable reply considering your choice of words. Unless I misunderstood the intent of your comments...

As you point out, it is their forum and we are all guests. I admit I would be annoyed if something was deleted without explanation. You could also send the Admin's a note to ask about the deletion and if the thread was important to you politely ask how you might be able to post to discuss a topic of interest.

If I recall correctly, there was an explanation posted by DaNag Bill when he deleted the post. I read you post and viewed your pictures on both threads. Personally, I have no interest an alarm system, but others apparently do. Whether or not one does, I think your response is way out of proportion to the ' problem'.

Hey, Idle Up, I agree w/ Bill and Mike on the double posting. Additionally, when I first read your post, my gut reaction was that it was a sales pitch. I am sure that it was not and so I did not mention it at the time. But, it was the first thing that came to my mind.

Next, I agree w/ Rogerbum's points. Especially, w/ your public rant. This is the second time now that you have picked an open fight w/ inflamatory language and insinuations. For those who do not remember, there was the whole deal about calling upon Ranger to change the 21. Don't you think that you ought to think about your tone and what it and you will accomplish before you post? I am tired of that type of behavior. Rock on Bill, Mike and the site.

First, there's a recent trend around here that bugs the snot out of me...I HATE being called a moderator. I know this is the norm at just about every forum site out there, and I've never spoken up about it before. One might even call it petty on my part...but I enjoy being an equal voice in this community, and go into cop mode only when absolutely necessary. Feel free to refer to us as Mike and Bill, or TyBoo and Da Nag.

Now...regarding your posts. No need for ruffled feathers, and I'm truly sorry if Mike and/or my actions bothered you. We've explained the rational behind why it was done, and after you re-posted yet again in the General forum, I thought my actions were a pretty decent compromise...leave it there to satisfy you, but lock it and place a link to the duplicate discussion where followups were already being made.

Again, sorry if you find the above unreasonable. And yes, I could have dropped you a PM when deleting the original duplicate, and probably should have...I was in a hurry, and assumed it was simply an error on your end. We've seen new users do this in the past, and the duplicate post was usually the result of them not being able to find the original.

It has been explained twice and since I have an aversion to triple posting I'm just going to let this one go.

Its gonna be a long winter.

IdleUp needs an album for Linda Sue. I don't know if putting all the pictures on Forum posts uses more space than putting them in an album, but he has a propensity for posting multiple series of pictures on Forum posts. Put your pictures in an album and then just use a highlighted link so if people are interested they can click once and look at them. Like this: Chatterbox Falls

To do this you need an album (ask Bill or Mike) and put your pictures in it. Go to the picture you want to link to, click on it to show it full size and right mouse click and click on copy link location. Now go to your post and type in the word or words that you want to use for the link. Type them in and highlight them. Now go to the URL button on the top of the page and click on it. That will put tags on both ends of the link. Ins...d look at a series of pictures in your album.

Da Nag and Tyboo: You guys rock. Always have, aways will. I've been in the seats you guys occupy, and "moderate" on another similar forum. You guys run a good ship here, and deserve absolutely no grief about your tactics, manners, or actions. My hat is off to you both, and the many participants who follow the precepts of DaNagTybooism, heretofore a small cult of off-islanders, but which has evolved into a major participatory revelation of wonderfulness. :thup :thup :thup

Hope you all have your boots on!

The biggest reason to not duplicate threads is to keep all the replies together. Otherwise the value is diminished.

The biggest annoyance in duplicating threads is the multiple entries on the various index lists. It's like having the same story in two chapters of a book with duplicate listings in the table of contents. More confusing than helpful.

I'm trying to be a little more helpful in this reply and a little less snippy. I do, however, kind of like being 90% contrary.

What Dave Said :thup

Like someone else mentioned when I go to the forum the first things I hit is "View Posts Since Last Visit" I then look thru the topics usually winding up reading all of them. For me when I need information about a specific topic I do a search and usually bring up several pages of topics. It's a lot easier to find information if there aren't multiple topics on the same subject. Topics I like to refer back to such as "Winter Reading" I have saved in my favorites so I can easily access it when I'm looking for recommendations on new reading material.

being a member of the prestigious board of directors, as well as a majority share holder, i can attest that this matter has been discussed at length with both, danag and tyboo. after a heated, high spirited discussion, we have determined that each post will be valued according to our standards and the merits, or lack there of, will ultimately decide our actions for same. because our individual schedules do not often permit the aggressive consumption of needed alcohol, we have this date appointed the following members and at their sole discretion, they and they alone will consume the necessary beverage and once consumed they will, in our absents, make all decisions regarding future matters, such as this. our committee will be represented by, in no order of importance, capt. maj. byrdman, capt. mattie my boy, capt. charlie, capt. nick, capt. dr. bob, and capt. joe. so as not to blatantly discriminate, we will be interviewing additional members, and for a fee, will make additional appointments.

now, don't make me scream, don't make me shout, just turn those pockets inside out.

There is a "button" link somewhere on most every page that says "View posts since last visit". Like Charlie, of late I've had too much time on my hands too and I use that page as my bookmarked C-Brat site URL. Duplicate posts stand out and so do posts that interest me. Very handy link.
On edit: Oops, repeating what Marvin said. Forgive the duplicate sentence.

As for the "Long Winter" comment by TyBoo, well, come on down here Mike. It's boringly sunny and warm again after a day of downpours that added up to at least 1/4".

Finally, the C-Brat site and concept as it was created by the two owners works great as-is. Has worked great since it's inception and will continue to work great as long as the politicians among us don't try to change what ain't broke.

The software itself may need occasional fine tuning but Bill stays pretty much on top of that.

I'm too quiet most of the time...really enjoy reading the posts and use the heck out of the "View posts since last visit" button, too.

My visits to the site are frequent (several times a day), and I look forward to coming back as soon as I log off. My boating buddies (Cobalt guys) are envious of this site, and are on it more than they'll admit.

This is a great opportunity for me to say thanks sincerely to Ty Boo Mike and Da Nag Bill for the opportunity to simply be amongst all of you. Particularly when I am kinda out here on the prairie with not many C-Dorys around at all. In that sense, the Comfortably Numb is an island.

Ty Boo Mike and Da Nag Bill - don't change anything (unless you want to) and please always remember that you have a bunch of people indebted to you and genuinely appreciative of all the work you do for us. It's not like you're doing it for the positive cash flow.

Thanks a lot,
Mark

Dang funny.

I'm in a quandry what to refer to Mike and Bill as. "Dear Leaders." "Scoobies and the Doo Doo's," (we being the Doo Doos of course). "Peter and Paul?"

Regardless, they do a great job.

IdleUp,

The REAL reason your posting was deleted?

You called it a "Sea Dory"!

Cut that out!

It's a C-Dory, short for Chopped Dory. Take a Sea Dory, chop the pointy end of the stern off and you've got a C-Dory.

Unfortunately this does not work for a Brat, no matter what you cut off of a C-Brat, we're still Brats!

Well, I knew I would get beat up on this Post - but no matter how you twist it, bend it, or distort it, the fact remains that there is absolutely nothing wrong with “Generic Posting” on different Forum.

If anything, this practice might be best represented as a lack of understanding, of the whole concept of moderators deleting similar multiple posts. This all started out to head off; “Spamming”, i.e. guys selling something to the general user public and attempt to get it on as many forums as possible. It was never intended for users who are only trying to share Generic ideas that could help different groups of users.

Like I said, I’m not expecting anyone to go up against the moderators (or owners) for me, but deleting Generic posts is bad practice. I just wish one person would explain just what is so bad that it had to be deleted – Normally deleting a post is reserved for much more severe forum violations. Gee, I’m starting to feel like a criminal now.

Is it C-Dory ?
I told you guys I was on the General Chat a few times – do you believe me now?
