For some of us that use a Garmin system - Garmin has released a software update. I've got the update but haven't tried it yet to see what has changed.

Changes made from version 5.50 to 5.60:
◦Added support for BlueChart g2 and g2 Vision version 11.5.
◦Changed safety shading control to be a user data entry field.
◦Added support for Portuguese fishing areas.
◦Added support for dolphin buoys
◦Added support for using built-in map update SD cards.
◦Added support for synchronizing Auto Scroll speed with networked chartplotters and GSD22.
◦Fixed issues causing slow and incomplete tide calculations.
◦Modified to silence AIS Lost Target banner if the AIS Collision Alarm is turned off.
◦Display Date/Time when scanning Track Points.
◦Improved lost AIS target time calculation.
◦Fixed bug where waypoint names were drawing incorrectly on map.

Thanks Dave,
Looks like most of the update is pretty meaningless for me. I've seen some screen shots over on the HT forum that indicate a much better rendition of data from the depth sounder also.

Toyman,
I have a 4208 I download the changes /updates on to an 2 gig SD card and then plug the SD card into the unit to update it. Since they are free I try to keep the unit updated. I wonder if they are ever going to rerelease the G2 vision chips/ maps which has something to do with this current update. I'm sure they don't want air to much dirty laundry so they don't look bad to the competition. I hear the bugs can be bad up there at the Lake of the Woods better take some Malaria pills before you vacation up there. What looks like a flock of birds might actually be mosquitos.
D.D.

DD You are correct about the BUGs ! I used to take the Malaria tabs like birth control tabs cause I never knew from day to day where I'd be tomorrow. Course then the birth control changed to the Little blue tab and it is down hill from there !! Instead of putting a camper back on Fan-C-Dory I'm contemplating putting a net - over the whole thing, hanging into the water all around. That way I could still fish, swim or whatever.

To keep on track - I have the update, I wonder if it will properly update the sounder module with the boat on the trailer ?

Toyman,
I think it updates what ever is connected to the main brain is what I read on the Garmin site. A friend who went to The Lake of the Woods in the summer said the bugs were ok during the day but at dusk he saw some so big they had out of state plates and the mosquitos knocked over the Mojitos with the air from their wings .

other stuff clipped

I bought a 2009 G2 Vision card from Boaters World not knowing they had been recalled from Garmin. It was for South Alaska and cost over $300. Garmin had me send it to them and replaced it temporarily with a 2008 version. Said they would replace that in about 45 days with the new latest 2010 G2 Vision Card. Hoping it does arrive before our PWS trip this summer. If anyone else doesn't know about this. Here's the link.

Jay,
I bumped into this and I thought you would be interested see below

Today Garmin announced that updated 2010 g2 and g2 Vision BlueCharts are now available, apparently with some interesting changes. If you recall, the company got pretty excited about the 2009 edition, but then suffered some grief when a processing error caused a global recall. I'm not sure the 2009 charts ever got out, but I'm darn sure that all new editions go through some serious quality control. I can't really tell from the screen shot above what the "redesign" talked about in the press release is like, because it largely involves "transitions between zoom levels" and other possibly valuable improvements that you need to see in use. But I did immediately recognize that busy harbor as Little Creek, VA, because I once departed to Bermuda from there, and there are a few new features that print can describe better...

For instance, while the new g2 and g2 Vision charts are available on pre-programmed cards right now, starting in April customers will be able to download regions of either flavor to their own SD cards. There's also a new feature in both chart levels that allows a user to add contour shading to all depths below a selected figure. Which sounds like what both Furuno and Raymarine have been offering for a while, and which is a valuable aid to situational awareness. Both chart levels are also going to include animated current arrows.
But I was rather struck with this screen shot of the new g2 Vision's 3D Fishing mode, because I've never seen it looking so good on my test 5212. But actually I haven't used that mode much recently and when I fired up the machine in the lab this afternoon, it turned out that one or another of the recent software updates has made it a lot better. That's Garmin style.

Thanks Dave, Will be contacting Garmin to see when they will be shipping the new G2 Vision SD card to me.

Anyone considering direct download to their own SD card realize the download is good for one device only where as a Garmin preloaded SD card can be switched between compatible devices.

Had orginally been told by a Garmin tech my Topo Mapscape CD's of Canada and the US which I now download to the Garmin 276C in different sets depending on planned routes and area destinations could also be used on the Colorado 400C by downloading to my own SD Card. Right now can't get the computer to recognize the gps unit. Says unit its producing an error. Have to wait until I can call them during the day to solve that problem, find out when they are sending new G2 Vision card and status of Garmin 276C unit that wouldn't take update that they had me send to them to see if they could solve the problem. Have had problems with the Garmin units, but find their techs overall very good to deal with in problem solving. At least they speak understandable English and With the 276C unit even though its four years old said it would be fixed or replaced at no cost to me.

lloyds,

Here is the change history for the last few on your unit:
I would say many of these including the most recent revisions look worth your time. Minimizing flakyness is a good thing in general so take what you can get.

Changes made from version 3.20 to 3.30:
◦Corrected the display of navigation waypoints when editing another route.
◦Fixed Demo Mode behavior for non-sounder units when the fishing chart is unavailable.
◦Improved display performance of the World Map.
◦Improved cartography authentication process.
◦Eliminated the potential for a rare lock-up while storing settings.
Changes made from version 3.10 to 3.20:
◦Added a control for selecting between two map vehicles and multiple sizes.
◦Enabled display of horizontal clearance information for bridges shown as lines.
◦Added a depth log to the sonar functions.
◦Added a prompt to delete unused route waypoints after deleting a route.
◦Improved map drawing performance.
◦Added alpha blending of weather radar and cloud cover with cartography.
◦Added additional engine, fuel, and vessel items to the Cruising Data Bar setup menu.
◦Added Label Devices under NMEA 2000 Setup which will allow labeling of NMEA 2000 engines and tanks with pre-defined names.
◦Changed the Engine Dashboard page automatic gauge configuration to only show the trim gauge if engine trim is available.
◦Created an NMEA 2000 Setup control in the Configuration->Communications menu and moved the Device List into the new setup menu.
◦Added support for sharing the rudder angle calibration across the NMEA2000 network to other Garmin plotters and instruments.
◦Corrected an issue with gauge needles partially drawing on the Engine dashboard page.
◦Improved experience when animating weather radar history.
◦Corrected operation of AIS On/Off switch for NMEA2000 AIS sources.
◦Improved autopilot and chartplotter synergy.
◦Moved 3D range ring labels to the side so they don't obstruct the view ahead of the vessel.
◦Added the ability to scan and review AIS vessels on the 3D charts.
◦Fixed an issue that would allow the cursor to pan outside of the 3D chart area after turning on data bars.
◦Corrected potential shutdown issue when navigating near the 180th meridian while using any of the 3D chart views.
◦Fixed an issue where the map cursor would lag map animation as the map re-centers.
◦Corrected a potential issue where fishing contours could be labeled using two different units of measure.
◦Simplified the user interface for creating new waypoints via Chart Menu->Waypoints & Tracks->New Waypoint and Information->User Data->Waypoints->Options->New Waypoint.
◦Corrected improper map rotations the first time a map is displayed while in Head Up orientation.
Changes made from version 3.00 to 3.10:
◦Corrected issue that caused some map areas to be shaded incorrectly. This issue is most likely seen as large areas filled with solid brown.
◦Fixed incorrect sun and moon predictions on the celestial page.
◦Fixed issue with fuel level gauge not updating on engine page.
◦Corrected issue where points representing cranes had purple boxes drawn around them.
◦Fixed condition where oil temperature gauge would remain in warning state on engine page.
◦Fixed issue with zoom range displaying 'Off' while creating new routes.
◦Corrected issue that caused the unit to indicate that user data transfers to SD card were complete prematurely.
◦Fixed a refresh issue with the compass tape control in the sonar menu.
