Garmin GPSMAP 740s

I just installed a new 740s. It has no GPS satellite reception with the internal antenna. I checked the location with a handheld GPS and had excellent reception. Did I get a faulty new unit that I should exchange?

Everything else works well including the radar and sonar. Thanks for your ideas, Ken

Ken,

Do you have a hand held GPS. If so, I would take it to right where you have the install done, and try it. See if it will connect with the satellites and give you a location. If it does, I would give Garmin a call. I have heard they are really good at Customer service and tech support.

Ours also had no problem w/ the internal antenna. Worked out of the box. Get a hold of Garmin service now while it's under warranty.

I have had a number of garmin GPS units with internal antennas, which worked well in the cabin of the C Dory. Just to be sure, you might hook it up, with the cables outside of the cabin (open the window on the side and take it out--should be plenty of cable).

Either way, contact Garmin Support.

Ithere anything in the set-up menu to choose the external antenna as the gps source over the internal? If so. make suer the unit is set-up to use the internal antenna.

There should also be a gps status page that will show satillite coverage and status. If it isn't receiving anything it will show that as well.
