Garmin is going to the next series of chart plotters and the 740s is on sale for $799 at West Marine--less on some internet sites. The new series is personified by the 741xs ($1699) which has chirp technology (transducer is an extra $299) and faster processing, with a few other features.

Thanks Dr Bob. A good tip. And to think, I just got the GPSMap 640 recently. I really nice machine for a stand alone backup, and it also has streets and roads too :thup

Garmin has always been one of my favorite traveling companions.

Ah, technology. What is new today will be obsolete next week...our 740S works fine for us though and I don't posses the wallet to keep up w/ the flavor of the week.

I am also happy with my 740S. I will probably keep it until the next boat.

The sonar is better than the 541s. The sounder is up to 1000 watts; there are 3 transducers for transom mount. One is the $70 which is made by Garmin. The best for the bucks is about $120 the p66 Airmar, for 6 pin Garmin, and then a 1000 Watt unit by Airmar which is expensive.
