For the holidays we flew to Sacramento and drove back to Seattle. We choice to tae the coast road most of the way so we could see my brother in Coo's bay. One the first night we stopped in Trinidad Ca. and spent the night at Trinidad head beach. There is no camping at the beach but we will never tell. We got in after dark and decided to go for a walk on the fishing pier. James yells out that he spotted a fish in the light of the pier. At first I did not believe him. Large fish just do not hang out on the surface. I figured a sea bird of some sort. I caught up with James and looked over the rail in time to see a giant squid. well probably a Humboldt squid. they are a deep water species that are caught by halibut and rock cod fisherman once in a while. The squid was about 4 ft long and bigger around then my leg, which ain’t saying much. The top of the head ,were the arrow shaped fins are, was two ft across. I never thought I would see one just swimming around on the surface like that. It just kept coming back to the light. we watched it swim around for 10 mins. it was very cold and windy that night. The mornings paper reported the winds had reached 60 mph and at least one boat had sunk down in Eureka. It was a truly once in a life time spotting.
