Furuno Radar

Dave, The Furuno displays are very good, but, the helm becomes pretty crowded with multiple displays. I'd consider using the Raymarine display for everything. Using the page options, you can have full size or half screen radar. Using the 2/3 ofset, it displays a lot of area.
At times, when radar is unnecessary, large depth and/or chart displays can be chosen. The more I use the E-80, the better it works for me. This is my $ .02 worth.

We have been using that radar unit on Valkyrie for the past two years and are very pleased with it. No problems at all.
We are using a Garmin chartplotter and fish-finder and we can get the speed and coordinates from the Garmin to display on the Furuno, but that's all.
That's fine with us though, because I guess I'm a belt-and-suspenders kind of guy and wanted two completely independent units for navigation in case one went down. El and Bill run two separate systems, as well.

I have two of the Furuno 1715 Radars. One on the TC 255 and the CD 25. I have owned several other Furuno's in the past.
We All have different opinions of what is "crowded". I have two 7" chart plotter/fishfinders on the TC on top of the console, and the Radar hung from the electronics shelf. I find this to be ideal for me. I like to have the chart plotter/depth sounders just below eye level when looking foreward. I can easily look up for the radar (not much out of the line of vision). In the CD 25 we have a 5" GPS plotter and a 5" fish finder, with the 7" Radar hung from the top shelf. (The radar is left folded up when not used.) Again, this works well for me. (I have a back up GPS/plotter and digital depth sounder available if necessary).
I also want separate units. l don't do overlay and perfer separate radar, but that probably is because I have been using radar for over 30 years and mentally overlay it on paper charts or a chart plotter and it is what I am used to. I don't want all eggs in one basket
I'll admit that some of the new radars look good, but Furuno has made good radars for many years and remains my first choice.

We have been using a Furuno 1715 for going on seven years, and, like Bob, prefer the radar and chartplotter units separate. The Furuno has worked like a charm; the separate systems give a 'screen' redundancy we believe is a significant safety factor. Our depth sounder is also a separate unit. With a failure of any one (or two) electronic systems we can still navigate -- and we also carry paper charts, if they all go in the midst of a storm (or some such).

It's really nice to know whats coming at you in the fog!
Before we bought the unit, we talked to a lot of commercial fisherman, they were the ones that sold me on Furno.
It is pretty darn easy to install and simple enough to use that even I can do it.

We've got the 1722C Navnet Furuno, but if I did it over I would use the stand alone units for Radar, Plotter, etc. The depthsounder is a separate unit. Since I don't have a heading sensor I can't overlay, I am stuck with the split screen.
I vote for the 1715 and get stand alone units.

Many thanks to all who responded to my query - I am going to go with the 1715 as my stand-alone radar. I think I will mail order from USA (for a $400+ cost saving). Does anyone in WA or Seattle area know of a reputable discount marine electronics supplier? If so would you pls PM the info to me.

I had my eye on a 1715 for a long time and located a really good price online. We ended up going with the 1623 and it works fine for us. I thought I wouldn't like the monochrome display but it works great! And the installation was easy. :thup

In case anyone else is interested, here's the link I PM'd to Dave. I almost pulled the trigger on this unit and this is the best price I could find online and it has stayed this way for several months.

I wondered if the power cord was extra, or included? If it was extra, the cost was the same as several other sites I use, which have good customer service, free shipping and include the power cord. Consumers Electronics is a good sized outfit and I get catalogues from them at least once a year, so it should be OK.
Bob, I just checked with Consumer Marine and the power cord is included in the package. I mentioned to the Customer Service guy that it was curious how the power cord was displayed using the search feature. He said that it was just an accessory and that the 1715 price was a complete package including the power cord.

Well the 1715 has been ordered from Consumers - thanks all for convincing input. As I previously stated I have a Raymarine C70 chartplotter installed and connected to an Icom M422 VHF with an NMEA lead. How does one interface the radar unit with the C70 along with the VHF? Googling the topic only makes me more confusder.....
